/PRNewswire/ --
A Revolutionary Curriculum That Encourages the Child to Think
Dr. Jawahar Surisetti,
India's
renowned psychologist and educationist, has been
awarded a doctorate by Columbia University this year. Known for his
educational and social innovations, this time he introduced the innovative
Think! Curriculum, a new learning methodology for school children.
Recently, while addressing the august audience of 1300 eminent education
leaders as a keynote speaker in an international university, Dr. Surisetti counter
questioned the doubts raised by the other speakers about the Indian education
system, the quality and the nature of research of subjects. Starting with a
question, "Why is it that in the Pre KG or Montessori classes we teach numbers
from 1 to 10, and not 0 to 9?", he addressed the basic issue of teaching and
learning without questioning and thinking.
In Dr. Surisetti's address, he questioned the very basis of all education systems
in the world, where questioning is not involved. He said, "Since we have
followed traditions, we have not questioned existing systems of education.
There is a need to involve thinking in the existing systems and in our children."
Elaborating on his programme, Surisetti said, "The need for a learning process
for children that is practical, fun and allows the use of higher order thinking
skills is the need of the hour and Think! Curriculum is the answer to this.
Children need to question, analyze and represent information and knowledge
served to them after thinking over it. These processes will increases their
employability skills in later life."
He was also invited by Columbia University to conduct research in the teaching
and learning processes. The findings of this research have been applied to
30000 students in the US.
The Think! Curriculum research has yielded some interesting results. First, a
majority of parents are not interested in what their children have learnt but are
more interested in grades. Secondly, there is a tendency of changing schools
more often. Parents are easily dissatisfied by the current school and then,
without taking into consideration the emotional bonding of children with peers,
the school is changed. Thirdly, 47% of teachers considered disciplined students,
who listened to them, intelligent as opposed to students who raised questions.
The success of Think! Curriculum lies in its increased outcome based learning
which is practical, interesting and involves thinking processes of a higher level.
Dr. Surisetti has already started the campaign to adopt thinking processes in
education in
India
through his movement. He has been also awarded 'Man of
the Year' for two consecutive years by the US State for his role in social
education and environmental awareness.
