Spanish ICourse Guide Señora Scott Teacher Contact Information School phone:986-4000 Voice mail:986-1499 ext. 8137 E-mail: Veronica.Scott@leesummit.k12.mo.us Course Description This is a two semester course that teaches the fundamentals of Spanish and introduces the cultures ofSpanish-speakers. Itemphasizes the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing; the use of practical vocabulary (greetings, school, leisure activities, family, food); and elementary grammar. Students listen to and tell stories, write short creative stories, develop reading skills. Activeclass participation is essential.Because this class emphasizes communication, regular attendance is required. Instructional Philosophy The (TPRS) Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling method is the approach employed in this course.The Spanish language is acquired through comprehensible input.The student is focused on the meaning of the message rather than the language.Vocabulary is initially introduced by associating it with a physical gesture.Short memorable scenarios that use the new words in authentic language structures are then introduced.The teacher narrates these scenarios and asks questions about the content of these scenarios while students act them out. Practice with a partner often occurs next and finally in a mini-story, the students will be reading the language and retelling the story from visuals.Stories are also retold in different verb tenses to further the practice of verb forms and grammar. Finally, students are encouraged to use the vocabulary creatively by writing and presenting orally their own original stories in the foreign language. Major Course Goals 1. Studentswill develop a basic Spanish vocabulary including gender, meaning and spelling. 2. Studentswill use correct vocabulary to write and to speak in Spanish about various topics and to communicate in life situations. 3. Studentswill communicate effectively in the Spanish language through speaking and writing. 4. Studentswill recognize and use correct Spanish pronunciation and intonation.
5. Studentswill read the written language and demonstrate an understanding of its meaning by responding appropriately to oral and/or written questions and/or prepare a written summary. 6. Studentswill develop and demonstrate listening comprehension skills of simple spoken Spanish by making appropriate responses. 7. Studentswill demonstrate an appreciation and respect for the differences of the various Spanish cultures around the world and the aspects of life in Spain and Latin America. Major Assignments and Projects 1. Acourse notebook organized to hold reference sheets, vocabulary lists, assignments, worksheets etc.This will be your class book! You will need a binder, 5 divider tabs, and loose-leaf paper. 2. Freewriting: Studentsare given a topic and they write uninterrupted for a set amount of time. 3. Silentsustained reading:Students read material of their choice in Spanish for a set amount of time. 4. Readingof novels:Patricia va a CaliforniaPobre AnaWrite a summary or answer comprehension questions based on the reading. 5. Partneror small group discussions 6. Roleplaying, conversations, and in class dialogues. 7. Oralreports and presentations Assessment Plan 1. UnitAssessment 2.UnannouncedQuizzes and Vocabulary tests 3. Oralpresentations: Integratethe vocabulary of the Unit into a coherent oral presentation. 4. Reading:Read a previously unseen text based on the unit guide words and demonstrate comprehension. 5. Writing:Incorporate the vocabulary and grammar of the unit in an original written work. The course grade will be figured as follows: Unit test and Announced quizzes50% Pop quizzes/Speaking Activities/40%  ClassParticipation/Written work/Notebook Final Exam10% Tutoring / Extra Help Plan Extra help is available from the teacher before of after school.Students are encouraged to make arrangements with the teacher at least a day ahead of th th time. Inaddition, my planning times are 4and 5hour each day.Any students with learning labs may make arrangements for help during these times.
Make-Up Work Policy Make –up work for absences is handled as outlined in the Student Handbook – one class day per each day absent.Missed tests or quizzes will be made – up after school.It is the students’ responsibility to make the necessary arrangements with the teacher. Late Work Policy The School’s OVERTIME HOMEWORK PROGRAM is administered in this class. Astudent may receive 50% credit for the assignment if turned in the day after the due date.If the student fails to turn in the assignment, the student will contact the parent and the student will be assigned an OVERTIME after school detention to complete the assignment.Incomplete or late assignments submitted after the unit test for that material will not be accepted. Plagiarism/cheating/on-line translations Written or oral production from a tutor, on-line translator or taken directly from an Internet site is not acceptable and will be considered as cheating as stated in the student handbook.Students suspected of using one of these sources will be counseled and asked to rewrite the assignment in order to receive partial credit. Havean open mind about Spanish and the cultures, which will be studied. 5. Obeyall school rules. CONSEQUENCES- Commitment Process First Offense:Warning Second Offense:25-minute detention w/teacher and phone call to parent Third Offense:Office referral (If any substitute teacher leaves your name for me, the second offense is your immediate consequence.)
