Throughout our visit, we talked to many parents and young people and we worked closely with the headteacher and staff.We wanted to find out how well young people were learning and achieving and how well the school supported them to do their best.The headteacher shared with us the school’s successes and priorities for improvement.We looked at some particular aspects of the school’s recent work including features of achievement, areas of the curriculum including literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing, the effectiveness of some staff training programmes, and how effectively the school plans to enhance its performance. As a result, we were able to find out how good the school was at improving young people’s education. Iwould now like to tell you what we found. How well do young people learn and achieve? We found that young people are learning very well and most are achieving well overall. Almost all are highly motivated and keen to do well.Young people are very well behaved, polite and helpful, for example with visitors to the school.In some subjects, young people are developing well as independent learners, for example assessing their own work and identifying targets for improvement.With good feedback from a growing number of staff, this is helping young people to make better progress in their learning.They enjoy working in ways which connect learning across different subjects, and would gain from more planned opportunities for this kind of work.Young people make good progress in almost all lessons, particularly where teachers set a brisk pace and high levels of challenge.They respond well to teachers’ questions and give thoughtful, confident answers. Young people achieve high standards when learning about citizenship, enterprise and work, through very highquality experiences provided by the school and its partners.They show enthusiasm and commitment, learning key skills in an impressive range of sporting, musical and other cultural activities.Young people are achieving very well in class, and across wider aspects of the curriculum which the school plans for them.These include valuable opportunities such as the jobs, employment and training (JET) scheme, “Model United Nations” debates and Comenius programmes, and the Community Sports Leadership Award. Some learners’ impressive work in art and design is used to enhance social areas.Young people’s achievements are recognised and celebrated through, for example, “BAFTA” and “Oscar” awards ceremonies.
