Colour A: 2 balls Pearl Gray #7471

Colour B: 1 ball Tobacco #7327

Colour C: 1 ball Red Clay #3480

Colour D: 1 ball Wheat #118

One pair D-shaped purse handles

Crochet Hook:

3.5mm (US E)

Bottom Gusset:

With Colour A, ch 21.

Sc in second ch from end, sc 20, ch 1. Turn

Sc in next 20 sc, ch 1, Turn.

Repeat last row until 58 rows have been

worked.

Sides of Tote:

Special stitch instructions:

dc7tog = [Yarn over hook and insert hook in

next st as if to dc, draw up loop, wrap hook

and draw through 2 loops]. Repeat 7 times,

making sure to insert the hook into the next

st each time. Yarn over hook and draw

through 8 loops at once.

dc4tog = Work as given for dc7tog but only

repeat instruction 4 times, Yarn over hook

and draw through 5 loops.

Stripe sequence:

Work foundation round in A

Rnds 1-2 in B

Rnds 3-4 in C

Rnds 5-6 in D

Rnds 7-8 in A

Repeat these 8 rnds once more, then rnds 1-

7 once more.

Work in the round along the edges of the

bottom gusset as follows, changing colours

as directed above:

Foundation round: Ch3, 3dc in the corner st

of gusset. Work along the long edge as

follows:

[sk 3 edge sts, sc in next 3 edge sts, sk 3 edge

sts, 7dc in the next edge st] 5 times.

Sk 3 edge sts, sc in next 3 edge sts, 7dc in the

corner st.

Now work along the free loops of the base

chain of the bottom gusset as follows:

Sk 3 ch, sc in next 3 ch, sk 3 ch, 7dc in next

ch, sk 3 ch, sc in next 3 ch, sk 3 ch, dc 7 in

corner st.

[sk 3 edge sts, sc in next 3 edge sts, sk 3 edge

sts, 7dc in the next edge st] 5 times. Sk 3

edge sts, sc in next 3 edge sts, 7dc in the

corner st.

Sk 3 sc, sc in next 3 sc, sk 3 sc, dc 7 in next sc,

sk 3 sc, sc in next 3 sc sk 3 sc, dc3 in corner.

Join into top of turning chain. Change colour.

Rnd 1: Sc in next 2 dc. [ch 3, dc7tog, ch 3, sc

in next 3 sc] 15 times. Ch 3, dc7tog, ch 3, sc

in next sc. Join in first sc of round.

Rnd 2: Sc in next 2 sc, [ 7dc in dc7tog, sc in

next 3 sc] 15 times, 7dc in dc7tog, sc in next

sc. Join in first sc of round. Fasten off. Break

yarn.

Change colour after these two rounds as

follows: Join in the new colour at the 3

rd

dc

of the last set of 7dc worked on the previous

rnd.

Repeat these last two rnds, joining new

colour as directed above until all of the

repeats of the Stripe Sequence have been

completed.

Top of Bag:

After the last repeat of Rnd 7 of the Stripe

Sequence, continue with Colour A as follows:

Sc in the next sc, [2sc in ch3 sp, sk dc7tog,

2sc in ch3 sp, sc in next 2 sc] 15 times. 2sc in

ch3 sp, sk dc7tog, 2sc in ch3 sp, sc in next sc.

Join in first sc of rnd, ch1

Next rnd: Sc in every sc of rnd. Join in first sc

of the round. Fasten off.

Make tabs for purse handles as follows:

Dc4 in the next dc7tog from the side of the

bag, ch1. Turn

Sc into each sc, ch1. Turn

[Sc into each sc, ch1. Turn] 7 times.

Dc4tog. Fasten off.

Make a tab into the next 6 dc7tog along the

front of the bag. Sk next dc7tog and make a

tab into the next 7 dc7tog along the back of

the bag. Use the tabs to attach a purse

handle. Lining with fabric is optional.
