Student Recruitment Subcommittee Meeting Minutes November 17, 1999

Co-Chair Dan Peck called a meeting of the Student Recruitment Subcommittee to order

on November 17, 1999 at United Parcel Service. The subcommittee was the guest of the

UPS Earn and Learn Program. Other members from the subcommittee in attendance

were Gary Burkart, David Bostwick, Patrick Gee, Leo Hine, Loren Sprowl, Dwight

Chernish, Paul Makinson, and Madelyn Harwood. Our host was Bret Williams,

Employment Manager Indiana District. Other UPS employees attending included Tony

Cunningham, Jeff Hopper, and Jeanette Payne.

Dan welcomed new members Dwight Chernish, Paul Makinson, Lonnie Walker, and

Loren Sprowl.

For the benefit of new members and UPS attendees, Dan provided an overview of the

Student Recruitment Subcommittee, its history, members, charter and objectives.

Fundamentally, the purpose of the subcommittee is to advise the School on how to more

effectively attract and grow its student population. He noted that at the beginning of this

calendar year, the subcommittee had identified School to Work Programs as an area of

opportunity.

Bret Williams, UPS, was introduced as the Director of the Earn to Learn Program. Bret

provided an overview of the program, which is fully detailed at www.upsjobs.com. The

program was initiated in August 1999 in response to low unemployment rates and the

subsequent shortage of workers. There are currently 78 students enrolled with a goal of

enrolling 500. The Earn and Learn Program leads the nation in providing part time

employees educational assistance. UPS promotes the program and recruits participants

from all IPS, Marion County, and most surrounding county high schools. UPS recruiters

make personal contact with high school counselors and students in the classrooms.

Information is also provided to the parents of high school students because they can

encourage their children more effectively if funding higher education is less of an issue.

Enrolled students work part time up to 25 hours per week. They generally begin as parcel

handlers with opportunity to be promoted to supervisory positions. A summary of

the benefits provided is as follows:

Paid education assistance up to $15,000.

Student loans up to $8,000 that UPS will repay on the student's behalf over a

period of employment after graduation.

If the student is promoted to management, an additional $5,000 is available.

It was suggested that UPS employees enrolled in Earn and Learn would be excellent

ambassadors who could talk to high schools about their experiences at UPS and at

IUPUI. Dave pointed out that IUPUI has an interactive web site listing several students

willing to discuss their experiences with interested parties. There is also a site being

prepared to reach prominent alumni. Tony pointed out that the typical IPS student does

not have access to the web.

Dan and Lonnie requested a demographic analysis that identifies secondary school

sources for incoming students. Dave reported that this information is routinely available

to each academic unit and is also shared with a point of contact in each secondary school.

Since Steve Bushouse, high school recruiter, was not able to be at the meeting, Gary took

that action to request the data and have it available for the next subcommittee meeting.

Madelyn noted that Lonnie represented IPS and that the subcommittees original charter

(1996) was to increase the number of students from IPS entering the School. In fact,

several years ago, there was a goal established to enroll 300 students from all high

schools. Madelyn received support to form a subcommittee chaired by herself and

including Lonnie to identify the current activities that promote IUPUI and the School to

IPS students. Lonnie stated that IPS held several events in which universities were invited

to put up

booths and recruit secondary school students. He claimed that IUPUI was not represented

at these events. Gary stated that was hard to believe and requested specifics

on when the events were held. Lonnie pointed out that the target audience is not juniors

and seniors because, for the

most part, they know where they are going to go after graduation. Changing their

destination would be very difficult. The right target is 8

th

graders. They are just

beginning to think higher education and if nurtured through high school, could be good

candidates.

Dan noted that the subcommittee had met in high school and industry facilities this year

with others tasked to encourage students to seek higher education goals. He asked the

subcommittee if they wished to continue this interaction and the response was positive.

Dave volunteered to serve as a point of contact to arrange a meeting site if the

subcommittee desired to visit a vocational school like J. Everett Light, McKenzie Career

Center, etc. Gary noted that the committee may want to visit the Technopolis center in

Anderson. Dan will announce the next meeting location and date.

Dan suggested that new goals be established for the subcommittee because it has several

new members and new goals for year 2000 would be appropriate. Dave suggested that

the subcommittee strive to identify one feasible idea that could be successfully

implemented.

Gary reported that the Joint Meeting of the DIAC and IAB's identified five issues and

made recommendations that should be considered for the School's strategic plan. These

actions have been submitted to the Dean and he will monitor the development of the

strategic plan and champion the actions recommended. The specific issue relevant to the

subcommittee's charter is the issue of Recruitment and Diversity.

Dan announced that he would be retiring from Visteon at the end of the year and that he

was seeking a replacement to Co-Chair with Madelyn. There were no volunteers. It was

noted that several new members were good candidates but required additional time on the

subcommittee before taking a leadership role. The issue was tabled for further

discussion. Loren, a first time attendee, stated that when he was asked to attend this

meeting, he

though the meeting would be of marginal value. Instead, he felt that the subject matter

was very relevant, the discussion and ideas meaningful, and he looked forward to further

contribution. Dan expressed appreciation to UPS for their hospitality.

There being no future business to bring before the subcommittee, the meeting was

adjourned.
