Acetylsalicylic Acid and Aspirin. In 1853, Gerhardt, unknowingly - since he had not attempted to isolate it but was instead seeking to prepare an anhydride - actually obtained acetylsalicylic acid for the first time. This was confirmed in 1869 by Prinzhorn in extracting by ether the reaction product. Von Gilm, in 1859, prepared and isolated the product of which he described several properties and determined the proportion of carbon and hydrogen.
The trademark Aspirin, property of Bayer, did not fall into the public domain following the treaty of Versailles, but rather as an outcome of a legal decision of the French courts concerning brand names, preventing the German company from obtaining exclusive rights.

Ohne es zu wissen (er hatte sie nicht rein dargestellt), und ohne es zu wollen (er versuchte ein Anhydrid präparieren), hat Gerhardt, 1853, zum ersten mal Azetylsalicylsäure gewonnen ; Prinzhorn, 1869, bewies es indem er sie mit Aether, aus dem Reaktionsprodukt, extrahierte. Von Gilm, 1859, hat diese Säure rein dargestellt, einige ihrer Eigenschaften beschrieben, und Kohlenstoff sowie Wasserstoff darin bestimmt.
Die Marke Aspirin, Eigentum von Bayer, ist nicht Allgemeingut durch den Versailler Vertrag geworden, sondern durch die Wahrenzeichen-Jurisprudenz der französischen Gerichte, welche die deutsche Gesellschaft davon abhielt eine Exclusivität zu beansprechen.
