La grande statue de Jupiter de Javols est bien celle du dieu au maillet Sucellus. Mais plutôt que d'assimiler celui-ci à Silvain, il convient d'attribuer à plusieurs détails de la représentation, notamment aux motifs figurés au revers, une signification bachique. L'amphore et le tonneau qui accompagnent Sucellus à Javols semblent faire de lui un patron de la distribution du vin plus que de la culture de la vigne.
The big statue of Jove in Javols is indeed the one of Sucellus, the god with the mallet. But instead of comparing it to Silvanus, it should rather be compared to Bacchus because of several details which are represented, in particular the patterns featured in the back of the statue. Sucellus in Javols, because of the amphora and the barrol linked to him, should be considered as a patron of wine giving rather than wine growing.

Abstract

The big statue of Jove in Javols is indeed the one of Sucellus, the god with the mallet. But instead of comparing it to Silvanus, it

should rather be compared to Bacchus because of several details which are represented, in particular the patterns featured in the

back of the statue. Sucellus in Javols, because of the amphora and the barrol linked to him, should be considered as a patron of

wine giving rather than wine growing.
