Proceedings of the workshop held in Madrid 30 September and 1 October 1987
Compte rendu du séminaire qui a eu lieu à Madrid le 30 septembre et le
1er octobre 1987
Atti del seminario tenutosi a Madrid il 30 settembre e il 1° ottobre 1987 PREFACE
The Commission of the European Communities (Directorate-
General for Science, Research and Development - DG XIX) has
implemented a four-year Non-Nuclear Energy R&D Programme
(1985-1988) for the development of renewable energy sources
and, in particular, biomass.
The four specific areas to which the biomass programme was
dedicated were:
production of biomass and improvement of productivity;
harvesting, transport, storage and drying;
biochemical conversion technologies;
thermochemicaln technologies.
About 150 contractors, from universities to industry, are
involved in this research and development activity, showing
interest in biomass energy from the fundamental research
point of view to market applications.
Now it is widely agreed that biomass should be exploited by
diversifying the agricultural activities to the non-
traditional types of production more adapted to energy
applications.
For this reason, then of Jerusalem Artichokes
(topinambour) appears to be a promising source for energy
from biomass, and the need to organise a meeting on this
subject became more apparent during the implementation of the
present CEC Biomass Energy Programme.
The aim of this meeting, attended by some 25 specialists, was
to promote awareness of this new specific type of production
for energy and industry, and to stimulate researchers to
further develop their activity in this field.
It is hoped that opportunities for new European trans
national collaborations will result from these discussions
preparing the strategy for future actions, while awaiting the
implementation of the Fifth Biomass Programme.
