This book is the first volume of a new series on solar energy research and
development which is carried out in the European Community. The Commission
of the European Community's Directorate General (XII) for Research, Science
and Education is currently implementing, on a cost-sharing basis, a solar
energy R+D programme through contracts with European industry, research
institutions and universities.
This programme covers the following sectors :
Project A - Solar Energy Applications to Dwellings t B Thermo-mech. Solar Power Plants
Project C - Photovoltaic Power Generation t D Photochemical, Photoelectrochemical and Photobiological
Processes
Project E - Energy from Biomass t F Solar Radiation Data
Project G - Wind Energy t H Solary in Agriculture and Industry
In the course of the programme the Commission organises each year several
coordination meetings to which the contractors within each sector are
invited to present details of their work.
As the information presented at these meetings is recent and of high
interest for other researchers working in these particular sectors, the
Commission has decided to start this new series of publications in
cooperation with D. Reidel Publishing Company in order that this new infor
mation can be quickly and widely circulated for the benefit of advancement
and progress in the whole field of solar energy.
This first volume covers the proceedings of the contractors' meeting on
"Energy from Biomass" held in June 1981 in Copenhagen. Approximately half
a dozen of this type of proceedings will be published each year from now
on; they will mostly concern the areas of "Solar Energy Applications to
Dwellings", Photovoltaic Power Generation", Photochemical, Photoelectro
chemical and Photobiological Processes" and last but not least "Solar
Radiation Data".
I hope that this series will attract the attention it deserves from the
solar energy community and can contribute to an early implementation of r energy.
