In order to take a closer look at the status of translation, as a genre, in the French literary System of the 19th century, we have focused our study on a survey of the translations of Goethe's ballad, Erlkönig, achieved between 1818 and 1860. Our questioning is about the modes of re-statement of the Foreign (its vision of the world, its imaginary world, its « sense-forms »), about the fantasies which determine them, as well as the underlying stakes. In the first place, we are considering the process of annexion and reduction of Otherness to Sameness which characterizes the « belles infideles », and we show how translation belongs to an hyper-textuality involving imitation and adaptation, beside parody and fragment. The second part of our study is then centered on the problems linked to the transposition of the fantastic from one language and culture to another one. In a third part, we approach the topic of the relationship between the translations of the Romantic ballad and the working out of the poem in prose. In the fourth and last part, we consider the 19th century translations of Erlkönig from the view-point of intercultural communication in order to define more precisely the mythical image of Germany which they carried and passed on to us.
Le statut de la traduction comme genre dans le système littéraire français du XIXe siècle est illustré par l'étude des traductions de la ballade de Goethe, Erlkönig, entre 1818 et 1860. On s'interroge sur les modalités de la réénonciation de l'Étranger, les fantasmes qui la déterminent, les enjeux qui la fondent. Sont pris en considération dans une première partie les procédés d'annexion et de réduction de l'Autre au Même qui caractérisent les «belles infidèles» et on montre que la traduction s'inscrit dans une hypertextualité où figurent aussi l'imitation et l'adaptation, à côté du pastiche, de la parodie et du fragment. Une deuxième partie est centrée sur la problématique liée à la transposition du fantastique d'une langue à l'autre et d'une culture à l'autre. Dans la troisième partie sont évoqués les rapports entre les traductions de la ballade romantique et la genèse du poème en prose. Enfin, la quatrième partie envisage les traductions d'Erlkönig dans l'optique de la communication interculturelle et l'image mythique de l'Allemagne qu'elles nous ont transmise à partir du Romantisme.
