Description

The South China Sea is a classic Mediterranean sea-structure with a long history of populations living in the basin and taking advantage of a permanent trading activity interrupted by some dramatic war moments. The Chinese preponderance on the development and the history of the basin has been a permanent element of both equilibrium and dilemma. Political and military tensions are heating up with a sharp increase in commercial relations amongst the regional countries and the great international powers.

ABSTRACTS
Alessandro GIRAUDO:The South China Sea: the Mediterranean of AsiaThe Basin exported spices, silk, porcelains and technology to the Middle East and to Western Europe that was forced to send gold to the Far East to offset the deficit of the trade balance. Arab, Indian and Chinese merchants played a major role in trading. With the large discoveries of silver in Europe and the incredible supply of American white metal, Europe was able to buy a much larger quantity of Asian products with an important positive effect on the growth of the basin. European merchants were able to conquer these markets and dominate the local economies with a dramatic impact on the Asian political paramount. Jean-François DI MEGLIO: South China Sea: mare nostrum or Sirtian shore? The «China sea» or the «South China Sea» (depending on where fluctuating borders are set) is by all means bigger than the Mediterranean Sea (between two and three times larger, whether its farthest extensions are included or not), China’s strategic interest for the «China sea» is not new. Long before the balance of economies and powers reached its new and full dimension, with an «oversized China» looming over the region, China had always taken the «long view». China has been challenging its neighbors (or has been challenged by its neighbors) over three main groups of islands or «so-called» islands. The issues beyond the territorial dispute implies strategic goals, regional and global security. Is a «Julien-Gracq-type» clash “envisageable” after so many years of mutual diffidence, careful watch and build-up?
