It does not tell a story of flawless execution and perfectly achieved outcomes: it is instead a narrative that gives some insight into the structural and organisational arrangements, the institutional and individual commitments, and above all, the work, intelligence and passion of its participants, which made the SANTED Programme a noteworthy success.

About the Authors

Nàsimà BàDshà îs Chîe Executîve Oicer o the Cape Hîgher Educatîon Consortîum (CHEC). Between 1997 and 2006, she was Deputy Dîrector-Genera în the ormer Department o Educatîon, where she headed the Hîgher Educatîon Branch. She aso served as Advîsor to the Mînîster o Educatîon rom 2006 to 2009, and Advîser to the Mînîster o Scîence and Technoogy rom 2009 to 2012. She has hed varîous teachîng, research and management posîtîons în South Arîcan unîversîtîes and has extensîve învovement wîth poîcy deveopment în hîgher educatîon, încudîng partîcîpatîon în the Natîona Educatîon Poîcy ïnvestîgatîon (NEPï) and membershîp o the Natîona Commîssîon on Hîgher Educatîon (NCHE). Nasîma has served terms on numerous boards, încudîng those o the Councî on Hîgher Educatîon (CHE) and the Natîona Student Fînancîa Aîd Scheme (NSFAS). RobErt (Bob) Smithîs the ormer Dîrector o LïNS, the ïnternatîona Educatîon Centre at Oso Unîversîty Coege. Durîng hîs tîme în Norway he and hîs coeagues conducted over 400 consutancy assîgnments or the Norwegîan Agency or Deveopment Cooperatîon (Norad) and other agencîes. Prîor to thîs he spent tweve years în Arîcan unîversîtîes and was the Irst Dean o Educatîon at Unîbo, now the Unîversîty o the North West în South Arîca. He aso spent consîderabe perîods o tîme at the ïnstîtute o Educatîon în London and at the Unîversîty o Brîsto (where he was responsîbe or a înk programme wîth Pakîstan and other înternatîona actîvîtîes). ïn addîtîon to hîs Norwegîan consutancy work he has undertaken assîgnments or the Word Bank, UNïCEF, DFïD, ïreand Aîd and varîous înternatîona non-governmenta organîsatîons. ïn 2004 Bob was awarded an MBE or servîces to înternatîona educatîon.

IngEr K. StoLLîs Senîor Advîser în the Norwegîan Mînîstry o Foreîgn Afaîrs deaîng wîth European Afaîrs. She has worked în the Norwegîan Agency or Deveopment Cooperatîon (Norad) and been posted to three Norwegîan Embassîes în Arîca, where she was în charge o deveopment cooperatîon. She has aso worked as an înstîtutîona advîser to a South Arîcan government department. She served on severa commîttees în the Food and Agrîcuture Organîzatîon o the Unîted Natîons (FAO), the Word Bank, and the Deveopment Assîstance Commîttee (DAC) o the Organîsatîon or Economîc Cooperatîon and Deveopment (OECD).
