H ave you ever thought about what life was like growing up in an early Native American Indian tribe? The children in those days lived life quite differently than how we live today. Read further to learn about life as a Native American Indian child.

The Typical Native American Family
T ypically, a Native American family would have around 3 to 4 children. This was considered small when compared to the average European family during this time period, which would typically have around six or seven children.

O ften, children were taught to be strong and to not show any emotion at a young age. It was expected that they follow the customs of their tribe. The grandparents would play an important role in raising and teaching the children. Occasionally the boys may be raised by an uncle instead of their father.

Early Childhood
B abies and young children would spend all of their time close to their mother. She would go about her daily chores and work and carry the baby in a cradleboard on her back. She would often nurse the child until it was about two or three years of age.
New children typically were treated very special and several tribes would perform ceremonies on the newborns.
