INSPIRING WORDS
“The more one judges, the less one loves.”
- Honoré de Balzac, Physiologie Du Mariage
CHAPTER 1

Monday - Cory
I’m 17 years old and so far the most exciting day of my life was when a dog managed to break free and get into my school. Actually, that sounds as though it could have been pretty exciting. You know, a wild dog breaks into a school full of children; they’re all backed into a corner watching the foam dripping slowly from its jowls. That of course is not what happened. It was a poodle, to start off with. It was a small, toy poodle that had somehow managed to chew through its lead. It took the janitor nearly half an hour to catch it and then our day went on as normal.
I don’t think it’s because I’m a boring person, though, I just live in a city where nothing ever seems to happen. Don’t get me wrong: living in Denver had some great advantages. The scenery, for one is beautiful. But scenery doesn't make up for the lack of excitement the town has to offer. It just means that you have something pretty to look at while you stare out of the window because you are bored.
My life had been a pretty good one, if you ignore the part about it being boring. My mom and dad were still married, which was more than half the kids in my school could say. They seemed to be happy together still, too. They completed each other in a way that made me aspire to have what they had, but again that seemed impossible where we lived and among the people of our city.
My school wasn’t exactly small, but I knew most of the girls in my dating range. I’d even dated a few of them, but it had never worked it. It wasn’t them, although I suppose they should share half of the blame if I’m being fair to myself. They just weren’t the right girls for me. They were nice, they laughed at my jokes and smiled whenever I caught their eyes, but they didn’t complete me. They didn’t bring anything to my life that I hadn’t already had. I needed someone who could bring me more.
I needed someone who could pull me out of my rut. I needed someone who would take my hand and demand that I take part in their adventures, because I couldn’t seem to find any of my own. That girl wasn’t at my high school, though. I was pretty sure that she wasn’t even in my city and I’m not overly convinced that she’d be found within my state, either. She was the impossible girl of my dreams and I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to find her anywhere outside of those dreams.
“Dude, you look totally out of it,” Danny said to me, so that I would pull my attention back into the classroom. We were sitting in science and the room held a feint chemical smell that seemed to burn away at the hairs in my nose and make my skin feel itchy.
“Yeah I guess I was.” I ran my hand through my hair to make sure that it wasn’t sticking up from where I’d been leaning on it, and then I turned my eyes to the front of the class. “This guy really knows how to keep someone’s attention, huh?” I murmured, as I tried to catch up with what the teacher had written on the board.
“I have no idea how I’m meant to pass this class,” Danny said in a defeated kind of way, as he put his pen down on the notes he’d been scribbling. “I have no idea what he’s saying and I’m actually trying to listen.”
I felt bad for Danny. He was one of those people who really tried, but nothing ever came easily to him. It wasn’t that he was stupid or even slow; it just took him a while to grasp things. I was the opposite. I seldom listened in my classes, because I didn’t need to. I had an easy time catching up on whatever I’d skipped over. I knew that, in a small way, Danny kind of resented me for that, but there wasn’t much I could do about it nor would I have done anything about if I could. Why would I make life more difficult for me when it wouldn't have made it any easier for him?
“Dude, I’ll go over it with you later if you want,” I offered, because I knew that finals were coming up and Danny was started to stress big-time about them. He nodded his thanks.
I turned my attention away from the teacher again. His voice was in such a monotone that I found it difficult to keep my ears tuned into it. Jenny and Sophie were sitting in front of me. I couldn’t see their faces, but I could tell it was them from their hair. They had matching ponytails that were kept straight with bright pink bows. I could hear them whispering to each other excitedly and I leaned closer so that I could hear what had got their feathers ruffled.
“I’m so cranked about Saturday,” Jenny said and then she squealed a little in that way that some girls do.
I winced at the sound, before I interrupted their conversation. “What’s happening Saturday?” I asked, and watched as both of them jumped.
Jenny turned to look at me and her little nose was wrinkled in disdain. I held my lips tight, so they wouldn’t break into a smile at her over-the-top reaction.
“Don’t you know it’s rude to listen to other people’s conversations?” she asked me sharply.
“Don’t you know it’s rude to burst people’s eardrums with your squealing?” I shot right back, and her eyes narrowed in on me.
“If you really have to know, there’s a party happening over at Richard's,” she said, as though this was information that wasn’t meant to be spread around. “His parents are going out of town and from what I heard it’s going to be wild.” Her face lit up with the possibilities of what the night would hold for her.
CHAPTER 2

Tuesday - Sky
My legs were aching from being cramped up in the back of my social worker’s car for the last twelve hours. She’d been driving through the night to make sure that I could start school first thing on Tuesday morning. I thought it was fucking stupid. Who starts a new school on a Tuesday? You obviously start a new school on a Monday and just wait out the remainder of the days until the next Monday turns up. Like waiting for the next bus.
“You know you’re going to have to take them out,” Penny, my social worker, said. She was looking in the rear view mirror and pointing to her lip. She turned her eyes back on the road as soon as she saw that I had seen her gesture.
“I’m not taking them out,” I said. I had three piercings around my lower lip, two on the right and one on the left that I insisted on wearing rings in. I didn’t do it because I thought other people might think I was cool. I did it because I liked them. With them in, I felt cool, more in control.
“The school doesn’t allow that kind of jewellery,” Penny said firmly.
“Well, I guess they’re going to have a problem with me then,” I sat back against the seat as if I didn't have a care in the world.
“Sky,” Penny said. Then she stopped to sigh, as she often does. I wonder if I'm the only person who makes her do that. “I know that you have trouble fitt
