“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
- Winston S. Churchill
CHAPTER 1

My skin felt sticky with the sweat I’d woken up to. I could feel my sheets sticking to me as I pushed myself up so that I could look around the room. My body felt stiff and I tried to stretch it out, but failed. My back burned in agonizing pain. What was wrong with me? I’d just had a pretty good night’s sleep, why did I still ache that much?
I walked slowly to the closet-sized bathroom which led off from the bedroom, and turned on the shower. It creaked and trickled into life, sending icy water down into the bathtub below it. I put my hand under the water and waited for it to warm up. It took a little while and my hand had gone numb before it felt any warmth, but eventually the shower was ready. I pulled off my clothes so that I could step in.
The water felt good as it poured down onto my face and front. I could feel heavy droplets running down my body and hitting the tips of my toes before they escaped down the drain hole. I turned and immediately regretted it. The water, which had been so soothing to my front, sent my back into a frenzy of pain that made no sense to me. I turned quickly, so that the pain would stop and so that I could turn off the water.
The instant clout of silence rang in my ears as the water shut off. I grabbed a towel from the floor and wrapped it around myself before I headed back through to my bedroom. I stopped by the mirror, which was hanging on the wall beside my bed and I stared into it. I turned slightly, so that I could look at my back to see whether I had some bruises or something to explain the intense pain and my eyes found themselves glued in horror over what they found.
My back looked as though it had been shredded. I could see the deep cuts running down in jagged lines, as though someone had pulled a rake over my skin with very little care or attention. I brought my hand around, so that I could run my fingers across the cuts. The blood around them was dry, but I could tell that they were a long way off being healed.
I forced myself to walk away from the mirror and the horror show it was reflecting back at me. It didn’t make sense. How had I been hurt so badly? Had it happened in my sleep? Could I have really have slept through something like that? It didn’t make sense, nothing in my life was making sense and I was getting increasingly frustrated over that fact.
I walked over to the ripped pair of jeans I’d been wearing the day that Lucia had found me in the diner. The universe-designed card was still in the pocket, I was sure of it, because I hadn’t bothered to chuck it away. I pulled the pair of jeans off of the floor and stuck my hand into the pocket, until I felt the straight edge of the card and then I pulled it out. I gave the room a quick sweep with my eyes for my cell.
I’d left it on the bed next to where I’d slept. I grabbed it and tapped on the screen, so that it would light up and allow me access to the dialler screen. It took a couple of minutes to unlock the phone and type out the number, but I eventually managed to lift the phone to my ear with the call connecting sound playing through the speaker.
“Seren?” Lucia asked, when she’d answered the call.
“How did you know it was me?”
“I don’t give my number out to many people,” she said quickly. “Why are you calling?”
“I need to see you.”
“You sound shaken up,” Lucia said thoughtfully. “Is everything okay?”
“You know full well that everything isn’t okay, otherwise I wouldn’t be calling you,” I snapped. I glanced back at the mirror, which was still reflecting the grizzly looking cuts down my back.
“Are you at home?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll be right over.”
She wasn’t lying.
