Lisa gave Calvin a choice and he made it. It’s just, when she gave him the choice to make, she'd thought he would pick the right one. He didn't, though. He didn't make the right choice. He didn't pick her. He picked Penelope instead. When Lisa decides to cut her trip short, she’s sure that it’s the right thing to do. She’s desperate to get away from Calvin and she knows that she can't do that until she’s put the trip behind her. When she gets on the plane home, though, she finds herself trapped with the very things that she has been trying to run from.

INSPIRING WORDS
“It is our choices... that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
- J. K. Rowling
CHAPTER 1

I had given him the choice. He had to pick. He had to choose whether he wanted me or her.
I had to give him time, though. I had to be fair. I have to give him a chance to think about it.
But giving him time wasn’t easy. I wanted to know. I wanted to step into his thoughts, so I could see whether I was holding my own within them.
He’d left the wedding late. Penelope had been draped over his arm, but from the limp look of her ankles it was for balance more than anything else. She was hammered. Her body swayed more than branches in the wind.
My dad had booked a hotel for Claire and him for the night. They were going on their honeymoon at the end of the week, but I think my dad wanted to do something nice for her. I didn’t mind. It meant that I had the manor all to myself. Well, if you didn’t count the house staff who never seemed to go home or sleep.
I walked through the quiet house looking into the rooms which I hadn’t yet had a chance to explore. The house was pretty big and I was sure that I wouldn’t know all of it before I went back to America.
After I’d walked around the house without purpose for a while, I decided to go to bed. I was feeling restless, but only because my question was still hanging in the cloudy space between myself and Calvin.
I somehow managed to fall asleep. I’m not quite sure what time it was, but it was sometime after I’d pictured what Calvin might look like standing at the top of a wedding aisle. He looked good, by the way. His broad shoulders looked good in a suit. His happy smile brightened his face.
My dreams were filled with him too. At first they were good, at first I was just with him and we were laughing and having a good time. It didn’t stay like that though. Penelope came strolling into the dreams with her fake hair and smile. She took him away from me. She pushed me and shoved me until I accepted my place, which wasn’t beside him.
I woke up gasping for breath. I sat up quickly and let the covers fall off of me. It was just a bad dream. It was just my mind messing with me. There was a chance that Calvin would pick me. It might have been a slim chance, but it was still a chance.
I reached over to my nightstand and looked at my cell. He hadn’t been in touch. I’d thought perhaps he might have texted me during the night, but there was nothing.
