Chapter 1: A background on Assassin s Creed IV: Black Flag
Assassin s Creed IV: Black Flag is the sixth installment in the Assassin s Creed series of games. It was released in 2013 and serves as a sequel to Assassin s creed III s modern storyline, released in 2012 and a prequel to its historical storyline, at the same time. It is described as an action adventure historical game and can be played on gaming platforms such as Xbox 360, Wii U and Playstation 3 during its initial release, and then months after, it also became available for the Playstation 4, Xbox One and Windows platforms.
The first setting of the game is 18 th century Caribbean, often called the Golden Age of Piracy. It revolves around the story of Edward Kenway, a pirate and who is also the grandfather of Assassin s Creed III s Ratonhake Ton who saw how the conflict started between the Templars and Assassins. The biggest difference between this game and its predecessors is that the gameplay of this one focuses on using the open world map (an open world map denotes the capability of a player to roam around a virtual world and is given the chance to decide how he wants to attain his objectives and complete his missions) and exploring the ship. Apart from that, it still is in the third person POV, with land explorations, stealth and combat. Multiplayer mode is also available but can only be used for land based settings.
The game also features three cities in the modern world, namely: Kingston, Havana and Nassau. British and Spanish influences are very evident in the game. Aside from the three main locations, there are around 50 more locations that can be explored. The player will come through forts, jungles, small villages and ruins and will also be able to swim in nearby beaches. Unlike its predecessors, the open world appears early in this game and missions are more diverse than games before it.
Another innovation in this game is that the player can actually customize his ship, the Jackdaw. Aside from that, the player gets access to a spyglass, which will be able to help him examine distant ships, and determine if there are still some animals to hunt in the area. The player will also have to engage in modern day Pirate wars, by means of exploring some of the enemies offices and getting to solve some puzzles and mysteries.
The story starts with the memories of Abstergo Industries taking samples from the body of Desmond Miles, the protagonist in the earlier Assassin s Creed Series. Abstergo Industries, in particular, Abstergo Entertainment, asks you, the player, to go through the memories of Edward Kenway in order to know what went on during the Age of Piracy, because they believe that this has something to do with Desmond Miles.
While being Edward Kenway, the player should be able to reveal that there is a conspiracy going on between the Templars and Spanish and British Empires because they are not able to clean up the ongoing piracy in the Caribbean. They also have used their positions in order to locate Bartholomew Roberts, also known as The Sage, the man who can take them to the Observatory. In the modern world, the player is going to be contacted by someone named John, who serves as the head of the Information Technology department of Abstergo Industries and will ask the player to investigate about what the employees of Abstergo are doing, because he believes that they know more than what they are saying.
This game actually came as a surprise to many because it was almost not complete. In February 2013, UBI Soft, the creator of the Assassin s Creed series, announced that the next installment in the series would be released in 2014. But fortunately, they were able to fix what was wrong, and finish the creation of the game. Assassin s Creed IV: Black Flag was released in November 2013.
The game has gained mostly positive reviews for its gameplay, side missions, naval combat and graphics. It also garnered a lot of nominations and won some awards, such as the Best Action Adventure Game award given by Spike VGX in 2013.
