Chapter 1 - Origins Evolution of the Battlefield Franchise
The original Battlefield 1942 was released in 2002 by the American video game publisher, Electronic Arts. The game was developed by a video game company in Sweden Digital Illusions CE. The first game was available for Windows and Mac computers, and became a huge success.
The game s main feature is a teamwork oriented battle ground without storyline limitations that is present in most first person shooter games in its time. Players can either choose to play in single player and practice with AI players, or go straight ahead into the highly competitive multiplayer mode which is playable on the internet or over a Local Area Network (LAN).The fast paced and highly explosive gaming experience became the trademark of the franchise.
Throughout the decade, numerous Battlefield sequels were released across different platforms. These titles are the greatest contributors to the Battlefield series of war games; offering innovations, game systems, and graphic upgrades that ultimately led to the development of Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 1942
In the original Battlefield 1942, players can choose from five different character classes that will fit a specific role in the battle; the Scout, Assault, Anti Tank, Medic, and Engineer. The costumes of these characters are highly based on World War 2 themes. As expected, players should choose between two teams to play: Axis Powers, and the Allies.
Battlefield 1942 featured vehicles, ships, and aircraft from the World War 2 era like the M10, Tiger tank, T95 Tank, various fighter and bomber aircraft, and a few submarines and ships. Players can drive and pilot these vehicles and man artilleries, anti aircraft guns, and machine guns to wreak havoc on the opposing team. The fights take place on vast terrains that is themed after famous WWII locations such as the Pacific, European, North African, Eastern, and Italian.
Since the game did not have a specific storyline (unlike most WWII first person shooters), the game delivered a high replay value. Setting the standard for the next releases, the game is still being played today. The developers have released two expansion packs for the original Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome, and Secret Weapons of WWII.

Battlefield 2
After the highly successful first release, Battlefield 2 was released on 2005 with modernized themes and was available only to the PC. This time, the game is based on a fictional warfare between the United States Marine Corps, the People s Republic of China, and the fictional MEC or Middle Eastern Coalition.
The most noticeable improvement in this release is its highly improved graphics, which was considered to be one of the best gaming environments during its time.
