Chapter 1 - Minecraft Crafting Basics
The Minecraft crafting system opens up doors for new possibilities to build better structures and improve your gaming experience. The first thing you need to do before attempting to craft something is to gather materials.
The entire world of Minecraft is literally a mine of resources. Almost everything in the game world can be gathered by breaking them with tools or by using your bare hands.
New players will start with no tools, so they will be using their hands to gather their first resources. The first resource you should be gathering is wood. Wood will be the main material you will use to build your first tools, which will help you gather even more resources faster.
Players can craft items in two ways; by using the inventory, and by using a crafting table. All players start with ability to craft items using the inventory. Simply press E to display the inventory window; the crafting area should be right beside your character s avatar.
The crafting area in your inventory is a 2x2 grid of slots where you will put the materials you want to use. However, the majority of crafting recipes in Minecraft requires a 3x3 grid so you can use more resources for crafting.
There are only a handful of items you can craft by using the inventory. Also, most tools cannot be crafted using the inventory. So the first thing you should craft is the crafting table.
Some crafted items require smelted materials like Iron Ingots, and Glass. The recipes for these materials will be included in Chapter 4.
Minecraft Crafting 1: Crafting Table
A crafting table provides players with a 3x3 crafting area. No Minecraft player can progress in the game without knowing how to create a crafting table.
Materials: Any Wood Planks x 4
Output: Crafting Table x 1
The recipe for the crafting table is simple. First, you need to craft Wood Planks . Simply place any piece of wood block ( Oak, Acacia, Birch, etc. ) into the inventory crafting area. Wood Planks are shapeless; there is no necessary arrangement of the materials in the grid to produce the desired item. The type of Wood Plank produced is the same as the type of Wood Block used. For example, you can create Spruce Wood Planks by using Spruce Wood. One Wood Block would yield 4 pieces of the corresponding Wood Plank.
To create a crafting table, just fill your inventory crafting grid with Wood Planks. The finished crafting table should show on the single grid at the right side of the crafting area.
To use the crafting table, simply place it anywhere you like. Click on the crafting table to display the 3x3 crafting window. This is what you will use to craft a lot of very useful items.
Note: For the rest of the crafting recipes in this book, the material arrangement will be done in a 3x3 grid to illustrate the crafting table s interface. It looks like this:

Minecraft Crafting 2: Sticks
Besides the crafting table, there is one more important object you can create with the 2x2 crafting grid; sticks.
Materials: Any Wood Planks x 2
Output: Sticks x 4
Sticks will be used for a number of different things, such as crafting tools, torches, weapons, signs, and so on.
To craft sticks, simply put 2 wood planks in this arrangement:

Minecraft Basics: Tools
Now that you have a crafting table and a bunch of sticks, you can now start crafting tools that will help you gather resources.
Different types of tools can be used for different purposes. For example, axes can be used to chop down wood blocks faster, while pickaxes can be used to mine stone or iron.
The materials to be used for tools can be Oak Wood Planks, Cobblestones, Iron Ingots, Gold Ingots, or Diamonds . The quality of the axe depends on the rarity of the material used besides the stick. Remember that you cannot use different materials for one tool. For example, you cannot craft an axe by using 2 Cobblestones and 1 Iron Ingot.
Minecraft Crafting 3: Axe
An axe is essential for collecting wood blocks. It can also be used as a weapon, and is fairly easy to craft.
Materials: Stick x 2, Material x 3
Output: Wood/Stone/Iron/Gold/Diamond Axe x 1
To craft an axe, place the materials in this arrangement: (Material = Wood, Stone, Iron, etc.)

Minecraft Crafting 4: Hoe
A Hoe can be used to till soil in preparation for farming. In Minecraft, you can grow crops and other plants by farming.
Materials: Stick x 2, Material x 2
Output: Wood/Stone/Iron/Gold/Diamond Hoe x 1
To craft a Hoe, place the materials in this arrangement: (Material = Wood, Stone, Iron, etc.)

Minecraft Crafting 5: Pickaxe
A Pickaxe can be used to mine for stone and iron blocks. Pickaxes are perfect for digging up mines or tunnels (in case you bump into some stone/iron blocks underground).
Materials: Stick x 2, Material x 3
Output: Wood/Stone/Iron/Gold/Diamon
