Description

The present volume, which is the 5th in the Nigerian Linguists Festschrift Series, is devoted to Professor Munzali A. Jibril, a celebrated icon in university administration, and an erudite Professor of English Linguistics. The title of this special edition was specifically chosen to crown Professor Jibril’s academic prowess in both English and indigenous Nigerian languages, and to mark and laud his official departure from active university lectureship. 72 assessed papers are included from the many submitted. Papers cover the main theme of the volume, i.e. the interaction between English and indigenous Nigerian languages, and there are a number of papers on other secular areas of linguistics such as: language and history, language planning and policy, language documentation, language engineering, lexicography, translation, gender studies, language acquisition, language teaching and learning, pragmatics, discourse and conversational analysis, and literature in English and African languages. There is also a rich section devoted to the majwor ‘traditional’ fields of linguistics - phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.

3UHIDFH heFestschrift Series for Nigerian Linguistshas gathered sufficient momentum, volTin the series, is devoted to Professo r Munzali A. Jibril. Professorume, which is the 5 and now it is a house-hold name in the linguistic circle both home and abroad. The project, therefore, no longer requires an y elaborate introduction. The present th Jibril is a celebrated icon in university administr ation, and an erudite Professor of English Linguistics. The title of this special edition was deliberately chosen to crown Professor Jibril’s academic prowess in both English and indigenous Nigerian languages, and to mark his official exit from active university lectureship in a GRAND STYLE.
To many of us his friends, former stud ents, colleagues and close associates, Professor Jibril represents the soli d and dependable bridge between the old and young generations of Nigerian linguists. While in office as the Rector Nigerian Defence Academy, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of his University (Bayero University, Kano), and later the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Jibril positively touched the lives of his colleagues and friends.
As Professor Jibril retires fr om active classroom teaching into active consultancy services, we pray and wish him well. This volume in print is our own little way to appreciate all the good deeds of this ever-shining STAR OF GOOD HOPE.
Of over 150 papers received for this volume, only 72 survived the rigours of assessment. Besides papers covering the main theme of this volume, i.e. the interaction between English and indigenous Nigerian languages, there are a number of papers on other secular areas of linguistics (e.g. language and history, language planning and policy, language documentation, language engineering, lexicography, translation, gender studies, language acquisition, language teaching and learning, pragmatic s, discourse and conversational analysis) and even literature in English and Afr ican languages. There is also a rich section devoted to the major ‘traditional’ fields of linguistics (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics).
We hope our readers will find this volume quit quality knowledge.
