Description

Diary of a Dismissed Delegate is the personal story of the trials and travails of George Ngwane as a civil servant in Cameroon. With documented evidence in support, the book delves into the destructive machinations of the bureaucracy and sycophancy at the heart of the Cameroonian public service, and its detrimental effects on meritocracy and the public good. It is a system where the personalisation of power devalues virtue, devotion and dedication to truth and the call of justice. For a country that has the ambition to recapture her lost middle income status, one that boasts of a huge critical mass of human capital, and that has all the potentials of a double digit economic development, political patronage and intolerance to creative freedom must be anathema.

Praise for this BookDiary of a Dismissed Delegate” is an epitome of a ‘system’; I dare not call it, the government that exists in Cameroon. The diary succinctly unveils the inner workings of a system that thrives on political patronage wherein clientelism supersedes merit, and where the quest, conquest and consolidation of political power by all means relegate hard work, steadfastness and truth to the background. There are many Cameroonian civil servants who have silently suffered, and who continue to endure what befell Mwalimu George Ngwane. “Diary of a Dismissed Delegate” is an unbiased narrative based on well documented evidence. In the book one can see how patriotism, love for motherland and development embodied by the writer have been sacrificed by those who are politically selfish and have no fear for the judge of the supreme court of conscience. At the end of a piece that kept me spellbound in a straight read, I came away with the impression that the Mwalimu is considering putting an end to his writing simply because his ‘writing mates’ have stopped writing or have moved on to other activities. I just hope I got this wrong! When a writer stops writing, he stops living! Long live the Mwalimu’s pen! I am looking forward to another incisive piece from Mwalimu George Ngwane sooner than later. Tehwui Lambiv Senior Journalist Cameroon Radio and Television and Lecturer, Advanced School of Mass Communication University of Yaounde II This is an interestingly revealing and a candid reflection of the plight of intellectual honesty versus blackmail and injustices. It is a vivid picture of a true servant of the people against sellers of
political illusion. In his characteristic style, George Ngwane paints mind-searching narratives where patriotism and pretence are at daggers drawn; and where inspiration and greedy ambitions clash. This beautifully crafted book will surely expand your space of freedom of expression and render you a servant of the people in a society where many and sundry prefer silence for position, even at the rape of their trappings. It is a document for every good coach and mentor of exemplary patriotism. Why not title it aDiary of a God-appointed crusader against injustices and corruption? At the end of it all, principles will always prevail over shallow political blackmail and intrigues. Professor Willibroad Dze-Ngwa Historian and Political Scientist University of Yaoundé I In thisDiary of a Dismissed Delegate,Mwalimu George Ngwane, recollects his short foray into the corridors of the Camerooniansystemmarked by its bureaucracy, sycophancy and the not less enticing comfort zone of the civil service elite. No one who reads this compelling narrative and who knows the Mwalimu would be surprised that it took so short for the contradictions of the system with his innermost principles and passion as a writer crusader for justice and the Anglophone cause could hardly have lasted longer. One is even amazed that neither the then Cultural Adviser at the South West Governor’s office nor the others who tried to lure him to the other side knew better. His many essays and books on the political impasse in Cameroon and the marginalisation of the Anglophone were already there to attest to his integrity and dogged determination. That he accepted to serve as a Delegate of Culture may seem to be a departure from his true self but when one looks at the agenda he set for himself, one sees a passionate professional who would have revolutionised the promotion of culture not only in the South West but across all of Cameroon.
