Description

The sixth edition of this popular text introducing human movement to a range of readers, offers the building blocks, signposts and opportunities to think about the application and integration of basic Human Movement theory. It confirms basic knowledge which is then applied to specific areas. Drawing on the expertise of a range of authors from the healthcare professions, the new edition has adopted a themed approach that links chapters in context.

The strength of this current edition is the explicit chapter integration which attempts to mimic the realities of human movement. The themed approach explores the psychosocial influences on movement. Integration is further facilitated by increased cross-referencing between the chapters and the innovative use of one themed case study throughout. Framed about a family unit, this case study enables chapter authors to explicitly apply the content of their chapters to the real world of human movement.     Taken as a whole, this more integrated format will enable readers to see the reality and complexity of human movement.

Dedication
We are grateful to our students and colleagues within the School of Healthcare Studies, Cardiff University for their patience and enthusiasm as we explored possible new directions for this, the sixth edition of Human Movement . These new ideas however could not have been considered without the strong foundation and readership base created for this text by its earlier editions. In this regard we are sincerely grateful for the work and commitment to Human Movement provided by Professor Marion Trew. From this secure foundation we have been able to extend our ideas to hopefully capture the interest and imagination of a breadth of readers curious about the wonders of human movement.

Preface
Tony Everett and Clare Kell

Human movement is fascinating but complex. We recognize that there are many excellent textbooks and other learning resources to help readers get to grips with the theoretical components of human movements and do not use this book in the same way. This new edition of Human Movement has taken steps to offer readers an accessible source that draws together the essence of the underpinning theory in order to explore the practical application of the theory to everyday human movement. To this end, the sixth edition is structured about four central themes: anatomy, physiology, mechanical factors and the environment, and psychosocial factors and the environment. Topic chapters are clustered into related themes to help readers navigate through each and consider related issues together.
The major new development for this edition is the use of a family-based case study. The family is introduced consistently throughout the book, with chapter authors specifically selecting elements of the family's daily routine to help readers see the application of their reading to practice. Each chapter also offers readers thought-provoking activities and, in the Evolve package, the opportunity to test out their learning through further case study–based scenarios. The book concludes with a substantive family-based scenario that effectively draws together and applies the key messages from the chapters.
We hope that readers will be left sharing our marvel at the complexity of human movement: the ease with which many of us do it every day, and the multiplicity and interdependence of factors that can make the normal more challenging. We hope also that the text and related scenarios will help readers notice things in their environment, try to look behind the movements they see and engage meaningfully with the complexity of human movement. If we succeed in our aims, we will have opened Human Movement to a broad readership, which can only benefit the ongoing research and therapeutic developments in this area.
