In the days of the Roman republic and empire, women did not have the rights that they have now. Women mostly had to do what the male head of their household directed. But even with such restrictions, many Roman women played important roles. Read on and find out more!
Women’s life in ancient Rome
Women in ancient Rome were supposed to concentrate on being wives and mothers. Young women did not get to decide whom they would marry or what they would do with their lives. The male head of the household, the paterfamilias, decided such things.

Within the household, women had im- portant roles, like managing the slaves and servants, balancing the books, mak- ing the meals, and educating the children until they were old enough to study with a tutor. Often, a wife was her husband’s “silent partner” and advisor about the husband’s career and the family busi- ness. But if a woman wanted to do more than that, she would meet resistance. For Roman culture of that time, women were just “naturally” lesser than men.
Because women of the period did not get a chance to go to school, most of them did not learn to read and write. That means that most of what we know about women of that time was written down by men. If the women had had a chance to tell their story, we would know a lot that we do not know now!
