The Colosseum

THE CLASS STRUCTURE OF ANCIENT ROME
A ncient Rome had a population that consisted of many people of different cultures and ethnicities. Not only did class structure exist, it was also very strictly enforced. There were free Romans and there were also slaves.

The Pantheon

T he status or rank of a Roman who was free depended on many different factors. Ancestry, wealth, and political affiliations were important factors. Attainment of military or political honors was also important. Citizenship was also a key factor. The lower classes included non-citizens, peasants and slaves.

WHEN DID THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE BEGIN?
T he social system in the city of Rome and ultimately the Roman Empire started as soon as Romulus founded the city in 753 BC. He put into place a government that was run by the elite class. These senators and patricians were those who held the power, both political and military.
