CHAPTER 1
The Basics of Islam
( 1 )
What are the pillars of Islam ?
There are five pillars in Islam. The first is the two testimonies: to witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger. The second is prayer: to pray five times daily. The third is fasting: to fast from dawn to sunset along the Ramadan month every year. The fourth is paying zakat once every year: to pay 2.5 % of annual savings. The fifth is to perform pilgrimage once in one's life: to go to Makkah if one is financially and physically capable of doing so .
Some of these pillars are done individually; some collectively. Some are done once in one's life; some daily; some yearly.
These five pillars do characterize Islam. No other religion gas them the way Islam does. They are unique to Islam .

( 2 )  What are the characteristics of Islam ?
difficult to enumerate them all. They are so many characteristics in Islam that it is All that has been said in this book tells about these characteristics. One British woman who converted to Islam said, " It suffices Islam to be the best of all beliefs that it prohibits alcohol."
Islam, in fact, is the best bounty granted by God to humans. Islam has protected man's life by prohibiting murder and punishing murderers. Islam has protected the man's mind by prohibiting alcohol and punishing drinkers. Islam has protected property by punishing thieves and robbers. Islam has protected personal honor by punishing slanderers. Islam has protected the family by punishing adulterers and adulteresses. Islam has protected religion by punishing apostates .
Imagine yourself living in a community where you are not secure about your life, where alcohol kills minds, where theft and robbery threaten property, where slander threatens names of people, and where adultery destroys families. What kind of life that would be! In fact, some Western communities suffer a great deal from all that: murder, crime, alcohol, slander, adultery, fornication, and all sorts of sins and crimes .

perfect pattern. It is the best patternAn Islam pattern of life is certainly a clean possible. If you want to choose a superb ideal pattern of life, your only right choice is inevitably going to be Islam .
What is Islam, in brief ?
( 3 )
Islam, in brief, is to believe in one God, to believe in His Revealed Books, to believe in His angels, to believe in God's messengers, and to believe in the Last Day .
Islam is good ethics, abiding by God's word, kindness to all people, curbing lusts, avoidance of sins, commanding people to do good, giving sincere advice, caring for the family, remembering God through five prayers every day, fasting the Ramadan month every year, paying zakat every year, and performing pilgrimage once in one's life .
Islam is very simple, very natural, very reasonable, and very practical. Just believe in God, obey Him, go straight, be religious, fear God, love Him, love others, and treat others kindly, mercifully, honestly and fairly .

( 4 )
Why does Islam emphasize the Muslim's fear of God ?
Fearing God is essential to controlling one's behavior. One can cheat the police, can cheat investigators, can cheat the court, can cheat the judge or the jury, and can cheat all, but he cannot cheat God .
If you believe in God, fear God, believe in the Day of Judgment, and believe in your accountability before God for what you say or do, this will certainly make a very significant difference in your life and behavior .
If one does not fear God or believe in Him in the first place, nothing can stop him from sinning, cheating, and violating laws as long as he feels he is not caught by people or the police. The best law can be misused or violated by people working illegally for money, bribes, and selfish profits. Fearing God is a safety-valve that regulates human behavior when other regulators fail to function .
In Arabic, we have a piece of wisdom that says, " If one fears God, don’t fear him. " Another piece of wisdom says, " Fear him who does not fear God."
