POURQUOI YHI?
YHI, titre de la publication annuelle de l'équipe de recherche
Stratégies des Pacifiques (GRIC), est tiré du nom de la déesse
aborigène du soleil, nos centres d'intérêts et d'analyse s'exprimant
principalement de façon symbolique.
En effet, que ce soit en politique, diplomatie, ou dans toute
activité créatrice, nous pensons que les choses attendent d'être
"réveillées" par le léger toucher de la lumière et le murmure de la
raison qui font s'estomper l'obscurité et les ombres de la nuit.
Si le monde est rempli de beauté, il a néanmoins besoin de
l'énergie vitale de la vie et de l'imagination radieuse afin
d'accomplir sa destinée. Mais, selon la légende aborigène :
"La lumière est à la fois dure et douce. Elle peut être violente et
implacable, elle peut être mordante comme elle peut réchauffer
et apaiser."

2007 FOREWORD
WHY YHI ?
In answer to many questions on the part of our readers regarding
the choice of YHI as title of the research team "Strategies in the
Pacific" (GRIC) publication, I would like to indicate that this
collective choice is basically related to our prime interest in
symbolism.
Be it in politics or in diplomacy or in all creative activities, we
think that things lay asleep, waiting for the soft touch of light and
the whisper of reason that dispel darkness and shadows.
This is why we adopted YHI, the Australian Aborigines' sun
goddess, because if the world is full of beauty, it needs dancing life
and radiant imagination to fulfil its destiny.
But as the Aboriginal legend goes,
"Light is a hard thing, and a gentle thing. It can be fierce and
relentless, it can be penetrating, it can be warm and soothing".

We do expect our themes of research to be true to the awakening of
the world and the dawning of truth.

My Français phrase-book isn't by my pillow.
To tell the truth, my pillow's missed the boat
though boat's sailed five hours late. Tomorrow's port
I'm programed down for poems : main one's
by Oodgeroo, her father's totem mate
Noonuccal-nurtured, crafty carpet snake.
Now, fidgeting the roughly-felted deck
(jolis of Atlantic elbow in my ear)
I'm pining for a far pacific bay
for Straddy's sandbanks where Minjerriba
makes dune-deep melody from Moreton's mud.
But Neptune's fingers fasten on my ear.
All channels are for crossing, chasms for closing
but cultural channels bare defiant teeth
singing, "Dive me if you dace, fathom my veins,
clutch my carotid pulse, i'll fend your femoral.
Wrestling Poseidon's perilous undertow
we'll prise the pearl from the oyster eye."
Now, midnight murdered, Portsmouth sunk astem
and Isle of Wight's wild blinkers dark adrift
we cross the canvas oil of Courbet's Wave
above Poseidon's totemic sea-horse
but, saddle sunk in alien wild seas,

Two decades deep i crossed the Quandamooka
(map-marked as Moreton Bay) to meet you, Kath
before, re-christening as Oodgeroo
you wove your narre with wisdom's Paperbark.
You gave me charter to perform your tale
--your dad's snake totem, twinned in poem and prose.
No Quandamooka now. but murky Manche
suddenly smiles, seeding her serpent sea
with reptile ripples, eggs of eastern dawn
and soon a coastline sprouts a stony tower.
Sliding the stone-stubbed shore of Normandy
Old Carpie coils. OK ! the surfs' scales shine.

Auteur, acteur et metteur en scène australien
Talentueux acteur, écrivain, Paul SHERMAN nous parle
avec émotion de son amie Kath WALKER, Oodgeroo de la tribu
Noonuccal, QLD, et de son espoir d'une aube nouvelle pour les
siens. Il évoque son rayonnement culturel par-delà les frontières,
de son engagement politique et social et de sa quête d'harmonie
entre les peuples. «Ne soyons pas amers » était sa ligne de
conduite spirituelle.

Paul SHERMAN is a graduate of the University of
Queensland, a writer, an actor and a director. He has performed in
most of Shakespeare's plays such as The Tempest, (Queensland
Theater Company 1999), The Merchant of Venice, Brisbane Arts
Theater (2001), Macbeth, Brisbane Arts Theater (2002), Twelfih
Night, Young Elizabethan Players (1966), Romeo and Juliet,
Queensland Theater Complany (1993), Much Ado about Nothing,
Shakespeare Festival (1949). He also directed the cast of the 1999
Queensland Theater Company production of The Tempest. As a
member of the Judith Wright Center of Contemporary Arts, he is to
participate in reading sessions during the Queensland Poetry
Festival of August 2007.

A TRIBUTE TO OODGEROO
OF THE TRIBE NOONUCCAL
(FORMERLY KATH WALKER) 1920-1993
It is 13 years since we farewelled her but her power still
resonates in her poetry and in the written and spoken responses to
her life and work. I have just been reading the first of this year's
issues of Meanjin. Entitled BLAK TIMES ("BLAK" being the
deliberate spelling), with an editorial by Peter MINTER whom I met
this year in Brisbane's Judith Wright Centre, it sold out rapidly and
I could only get a copy by calling at the Meanjin office in
Melbourne. Oodgeroo is imaged in it in artwork by Tracey
MOFFATT and in a moving poem (Tribute to Aunty Kath) by
Dennis FOLEY. His poem evokes "the twinkle in her eye" which I
remember from my meetings with her and from a luminous
photograph which Australia's Bernard HICKEY, then Professor of
English in the University of Lecce in southern Italy, had pinned to
the wall of the Australian library there. Her sparkling eyes and her
lustrous smile fed an image in the poem I wrote and which then
poetry editor Bruce DAwE published in the Courier Mail soon alter
her death in 1993: "Your smile —ripple of light in a Stradbroke
lagoon..." My poem was later translated into Italian by Sylvia
CAZZATO OF LECCE.
Oodgeroo's poetry is also well loved in the University of
Le Havre in France where, in the Stan Mellick Room cherished by
Professor Maryvonne NEDELJKOVIC, I have performed Oodgeroo's
poetry. I first met Oodgeroo nearly two decades ago when I recited
her poem "Cookalingee" in the community hall of Dunwich on her
island home of Minjerriba (or "Stradbroke"). Laer, in the Dunwich
State School, she was sitting smiling among the students when I
acted her story of Old Carpie, the omnipresent carpet snake, ber
father's tribal totem. Carpie is also the epicentre of her poem,
"Ballad of the Totems", one of four by her in 50 Years of
Queensland Poetry, edited by
