Description

Largely concerned with Family Politics and Deception in northern North America and West-Central Africa, this book is intended mostly to provoke and enlighten. The book fossungupalogizes on whether or not northern North American courts are able to live up to the standard of exclusively saying exactly what the law is in regard of the apparent war between the mounting same-sex marriage legalization drive and the traditional Western religious conception of marriage as endorsed by Americas 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. It also tackles some intriguingly troubling matters emanating from African customary marriages and inheritance, subjects presenting some odd faces of marriage and family very similar at times to those engendered by same-sex marriage in northern North America. Its underlying preaching is that positive things could often be found even in tragedies. Hence, you should learn to make the best of your troubles instead of letting these haunt you a goal easily attained by cultivating the habit of looking at the larger picture of things. Even ones stupid and non-professional ideas could be learning ground to more people than one ever could have imagined.

Introduction If your spouse or partner can lie to you about his/her children that he/she had before ever meeting you, on what else would such a person not lie about? And if you are truly the drunkard and abusive person that you are painted as being, would you (after discovering this big lie and several others) still go ahead and seek to ameliorate things for both liar and said children? But that is what this ‘drunkard and abusive person’ talking to you has endlessly tried to do. I know many people would be wondering here: “What on earth was he thinking doing that?”(Fossungu, 2015a: 55)This book is largely concerned with Family Politics and Deception in Northern North America and West-Central Africa. Behind it is a “bad news” trip I made to Africa in mid-1 2014. I will obviously be returning to the said voyage. But what is important here is to acquaint you to the preaching that you could often find things positive even in tragedies or things that most others will consider negative. I am certainly not a cockpit preacher but I guess you easily cultivate this habit when you develop the habit of looking at the larger picture of things. In this way, you are able, for example, to
1 Some of what appears in this Introduction is adapted from author’s “Introduction: Finding Positives in Negatives” (March 24, 2015) @ http://www.diasporatalk.com/introduction-finding-positives-in-negatives/. A lot of the material in the book also builds on author’s research at the University of Windsor known as the Major Research Paper (MRP) titled “Religion, Same-Sex Marriage, and the Courts in American Politics” that was successfully defended on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Arts – Political Science. Dr. Stephen Brooks supervised the said research. vii
put your troubling past to positive use instead of letting it haunt you. Whether you are a professional or not you must have to appreciate that even your “stupid” and non-professional ideas could be learning ground to a lot of people than you ever could have imagined. Critical as you may find my viewpoint to be, I do not just intend to point fingers but mostly to provoke and enlighten. The book examines, among others, the manner the courts have grappled with the very problematic issues generated by religion and the struggles for same-sex marriage (SSM) legalization in northern North America (Canada and the United States of America), but notably in the United States. It seeks tofossungupalogizeyou on whether or not the U.S. with ‘judicial department’ has been able to live up to the standard of ‘exclusively saying exactly what the law is’ in regard of the apparent war between the mounting same-sex marriage legalization drive and the traditional Western religious conception of marriage as endorsed by the 1996Defense of Marriage Act(DOMA). It also tackles some intriguing issues emanating from African customary marriages and inheritance; subjects that present odd faces of marriage and family very similar at times to those created by SSM in Northern North America (hereinafter NNA) that the courts are called upon to grapple with. The power and influence of the American judge are enormous and could not fail to make a lasting impression on Alexis De Tocqueville who wrote about them in his famousDemocracy in Americain 1833. The issue of SSM seems to have accelerated more than ten-fold the American court’s power and influence while paradoxically dragging in a lot of questions on the exercise of such enormous powers by unelected officials.

At this point you certainly are pondering on the connection between the DOMA-SSM issues and Africa, a continent which is well known to leanmore on the side of what I would describe as African Customary Marriage (ACM). Your query is legitimate and necessitates our taking off to West-Central Africa. Thanks to the online wizardry of Richard Dwomoh (my Ghanaian colleague at the University of Windsor), I was sitting on Ethiopian Airlines Flight Number 503 on May 6, 2014, en route to Douala (Cameroon) via Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) via encore Malabo (Equatorial Guinea). The Addis Ababa to Douala segment of this eye-openingwakawas on Flight Number 915 – of course, still on “The New Spirit of Africa” (Ethiopian Airlines’ Logo). It is not just this telling Logo that put the voyage on a class of its own likeChristickinology. Like this Love Science, this trip too was so special for a host of reasons. It was the first time I was going to Africa without the usual hassle-filled stopover in Europe (those who have access to the SobaAmerica Forum would better describe lots of such gruesome experiences, especially in France, to you). It was North America (Toronto’s Pearson International Airport) direct to Africa. But it was like most of my other trips made to Mama Africa: with the somewhat exception of the January 2007 voyage. The 2007 journey was the first I made without a pressing hasty call from home like all the others. In short, it was fairly well planned and meant to get there for marriage purposes. I was going to Cameroon in order to formalize things with the parents and other relations of my Bafutfiancé. But something deliberately refused that the trip be different since the usual emergency call still came as I was half-way. While in Zurich (Switzerland), I called a family member to let him and others pick me up at Douala International Airport at such and such
