The melody was extremely popular in both England and the United States at the time. According to James Fuld's The Book of World-Famous Music (5th ed, 2000, Dover), there were more than 85 lyric poems set to this tune - mostly of a patriotic nature - published between 1790 and 1820 in the United States alone..
