Molière never invented a more diverting fable, nor directed its treatment morewith
pungent satire against his cherished laughing-stock—the doctors—than that on which is built
"the immortal comedy of Le Médecin Malgré Lui," which when adapted by Fielding to the
"English stage received from him Mock Doctor," now againthe title of The employed to
designate the English version of the work in its operatic garb. It was a happy idea to arrange
this master-piece of the great French comic genius for musical treatment, and the authors are

essential, subtracting anything and merely inserting here and there songs, duets, and con-
certed pieces springing out of the situations themselves, and in most instances employing the
phraseology of the original. But we are forgetting to tell the story of the Mock Doctor.
Sganarelle (called Dominique by the English a drunken wood-cutter,adapter) is who ill-
treats his wife. She is only awaiting an opportunity of revenge, when Valere and Lucas,
servants of Géronte, present themselves in search of a doctor for Géronte's daughter,
