AMÉLIE ARA RÉDACTRICE EN CHEF
Will BoJo be able to keep his mojo?
Since the end of July, number 10 Downing Street has had a new resident - Boris Johnson. On 23 July, the former Foreign Minister, best known for his extravagant behaviour and spearhead-ing of the Brexit campaign, was elected leader of the Conservative Party, beating his last rival, Jeremy Hunt to becoming the new British Prime Minister.
A perfect example of the entitled ‘establishment’, educated at Eton and then Oxford, from a very well connected political family, Boris Johnson is however, a politician elected on a minuscule consensus within the country. He has always been a controversial gure, even for members of his own party, with his extreme and often shocking pronouncements. In the summer of 2018, one of his articles in theDaily Telegraphled to an enquiry by his own party for infractions of the code of good conduct. Despite all this, “BoJo” is popular with a certain section of the popula tion, earned during his time as Mayor of London. Will this be enough to secure a less turbulent premiership than his predecessor, Theresa May?Nothing is certain.
He has lled his new cabinet with fervent Brexi teers in order to deliver on his promise to the British people to leave the European Union at the end of October… with or without a deal. This is on top of the many challenges that face him: to work with a majority of only one seat in parliament, resist a likely vote of no condence, and above all, preserve the unity of the kingdom.
