connect,"Zuckerbergsaid."Therearehugebarriersindevelopingcountriestoconnectingandjoining
theknowledgeeconomy.Internet.orgbringstogetheraglobalpartnershipthatwillworktoovercome
thesechallenges,includingmakinginternetaccessavailabletothosewhocannotcurrentlyaffordit."
Today,only2.7billionpeople–justoverone-thirdoftheworld'spopulation--haveaccesstothe
internet.Internetadoptionisgrowingbylessthan9%eachyear,whichisslowconsideringhowearlywe
areinitsdevelopment.
ThegoalofInternet.orgistomakeinternetaccessavailabletothetwo-thirdsoftheworldwhoarenot
yetconnected,andtobringthesameopportunitiestoeveryonethattheconnectedthirdoftheworld
hastoday.
Thefoundingmembersofinternet.org--Facebook,Ericsson,MediaTek,Nokia,Opera,Qualcommand
Samsung--willdevelopjointprojects,shareknowledge,andmobilizeindustryandgovernmentsto
bringtheworldonline.Thesefoundingcompanieshavealonghistoryofworkingcloselywithmobile
operatorsandexpectthemtoplayleadingroleswithintheinitiative,whichovertimewillalsoinclude
NGOs,academicsandexpertsaswell.Internet.orgisinfluencedbythesuccessfulOpenCompute
Project,anindustry-wideinitiativethathasloweredthecostsofcloudcomputingbymakinghardware
designsmoreefficientandinnovative.
Inordertoachieveitsgoalofconnectingthetwo-thirdsoftheworldwhoarenotyetonline,
internet.orgwillfocusonthreekeychallengesindevelopingcountries:
Makingaccessaffordable:Partnerswillcollaboratetodevelopandadopttechnologiesthatmake
mobileconnectivitymoreaffordableanddecreasethecostofdeliveringdatatopeopleworldwide.
Potentialprojectsincludecollaborationstodeveloplower-cost,higher-qualitysmartphonesand
partnershipstomorebroadlydeployinternetaccessinunderservedcommunities.Mobileoperatorswill
playacentralroleinthiseffortbydrivinginitiativesthatbenefittheentireecosystem.
Usingdatamoreefficiently:Partnerswillinvestintoolsthatdramaticallyreducetheamountofdata
requiredtousemostappsandinternetexperiences.Potentialprojectsincludedevelopingdata
compressiontools,enhancingnetworkcapabilitiestomoreefficientlyhandledata,buildingsystemsto
cachedataefficientlyandcreatingframeworksforappstoreducedatausage.
Helpingbusinessesdriveaccess:Partnerswillsupportdevelopmentofsustainablenewbusinessmodels
andservicesthatmakeiteasierforpeopletoaccesstheinternet.Thisincludestestingnewmodelsthat
alignincentivesformobileoperators,devicemanufacturers,developersandotherbusinessestoprovide
moreaffordableaccessthanhaspreviouslybeenpossible.Othereffortswillfocusonlocalizingservices–workingwithoperatingsystemprovidersandotherpartnerstoenablemorelanguagesonmobile
devices.
Byreducingthecostandamountofdatarequiredformostappsandenablingnewbusinessmodels,
Internet.orgisfocusedonenablingthenext5billionpeopletocomeonline.
Facebook,Ericsson,MediaTek,Nokia,Opera,Qualcomm,Samsungandotherpartnerswillbuildon
existingpartnershipswhileexploringnewwaystocollaboratetosolvetheseproblems.
