qedis Consultant Raises Nearly $30,000 for
Alzheimer's Research by Rowing from Miami to
New York in 100 days!
PR Newswire
LONDON, June 12, 2012
LONDON
,
June 12, 2012
/PRNewswire/ --
qedis Consultant, Lewis Colam, challenged the norm and did what he
dared to dream; rowing in a little wooden boat from
Miami
to
New
York
to raise money for Alzheimer's!
Lewis, 24, was offered a sabbatical by employer qedis to embark on a truly
unique adventure; rowing unassisted up the East Coast of America from
Miami
to
New York City
. This brave feat saw Lewis row for up to 18 hours a day for 3
months, in order to cover the 1400 miles of Intracoastal Waterway and open
waters of the Atlantic Ocean. His trip was not without dangers, and to avoid the
constant threat of alligators and sharks, he spent his nights at anchor and slept
on the open-deck of his 15 foot rowing boat.
Lewis was motivated by the incredible support he received in the US,
particularly from those in rowing, kayaking and sailing clubs on the East Coast
who came out to join him in completing various legs of this remarkable trip. He
has also been helped by the public, who have also been touched by his
inspirational journey. The kindness they have extended to him include
substantial donations, messages of support and rooms for the night as he
passed through their towns. If that wasn't enough, Lewis also appeared on the
news http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yssFPOj4rqk&feature=youtu.be and
was invited to visit the White House when he arrived in
Washington
.
So far Lewis has raised
$28,000
for the
Fisher Centre
- an international
Alzheimer's research foundation, smashing his original target of
$20,000
.
Finding a cure for Alzheimer's has been close to his heart ever since he cared
for a family member who suffered from this disease, and it is safe to say that
the money he has raised with go a long way towards helping with this research.
qedis believes in supporting its people, both through developing them in the
workplace and giving them the opportunity to accomplish their dreams. qedis
has provided sponsorship to Lewis towards his trip and can't wait to support him
on his return. The company is incredibly proud of him.
