LONDON,July 24, 2012/PRNewswire/ -- In recent weeks there has been another rise in catalytic converter thefts and VanQuoteDirect are urging van drivers up and down the country to be careful about where they leave their van overnight. Last month it was reported that a surge of thefts hit theLeicestershirearea with a total of 249 thefts taking place between the start of the year and the end of May. This is a vast amount higher than the same period last year in which there were 47 thefts. Joe de Vries, of VanQuoteDirect, a leadingvan insurancewebsite, has been quoted saying: "It's terrible news that catalytic converter thefts have shot up this year and it's something that all van owners must be aware of, no matter what part of the country they're situated in. Ideally it'd be a good idea to park your van in a secure garage every night, however, if that is not a possibility then parking it in a well lit area will be a good option, below a street lamp for example. If you can cover your van at night, that may also be a wise idea. Of course, if you are covering it up, then you'll have to wait for it to cool down before doing so." He went on to add: "Whatever your situation, it will be worth taking certain measures to ensure the safety of your van." It is believed that the theft of catalytic converters has become increasingly popular amongst organised gangs due to the increase in the cost of scrap metal. Furthermore, it is also believed that the units are then sent overseas in order for them to be stripped of metal.
