Description
Aussi, entre une agriculture ultra-productiviste et des paysans « gardiens de la nature », des formules intermédiaires devront être trouvées à l'avenir, afin de préserver le tissu rural de la Gascogne gersoise.
Since 1846, the département of the Gers has lost hearly half its population. To day, it is even threatened with depopulation. Yet, Gascon farmers have undertaken a spectacular « silent revolution » over the last thirty years. So much so that traditionnal polyculture has given way to an intensive and adjustable polyproduction. Because of this, agriculture in the Gers had moved from 63rd position on a national scale to 7th by 1986. However, from 1974, this form of agriculture with its brilliant results has appeared more fragile than other types in the face of the crisis and the mathusian directives from Brussels.
In the Gers now, there is a tendancy towards an ultra-productivist form of agriculture alongside farmers keen to take care of nature. In the future, a middle course will have to be found between these two approaches in order to preserve the rural fabric of Gascon Gers.
