Summary:

This DigitalGlobe FirstWatch report provides an imagery-based coverage and initial analysis of the massive

flooding seen along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and highlights an area near Cairo, Illinois where the U.S. Army Corps

of Engineers has intentionally breached a levee to help ease the flood pressure. According to ABC and CNN News, the

third and final section of the Birds Point Levee was artificially breached on May 5, 2011 by the Engineers in an attempt to

ease record high water levels in the Mississippi River. Once created, the hole in the levee was intended to allow the flood

waters to spill into the New Madrid Floodway, thus drawing the waters away from small communities that would

otherwise be flooded.

Analysis:

DigitalGlobe’s unique 8

-band multispectral satellite imagery of the area on May 5, 2011 clearly revealed the full

extent of flooding and detailed the status of the Birds Point-New Madrid levee, including a 2-mile portion that had been

destroyed (Slide 5). Initial analysis of the satellite imagery over the affected area revealed extensive flooding of the

Mississippi River and surrounding areas, including many homes and farms that have been affected (Slide 7).
