 FrequentlyAsked Questions Regarding School-Issued Student Computers The Hotchkiss School, 2010-2011 How long can I keep my MacBook? The computer you were issued will be yours throughout your time at Hotchkiss as long as you remain eligible to receive a computer.For the Class of 2014, you will be issued your computer each year until you graduate. Do I own the MacBook? No, The Hotchkiss School owns the computer.This allows us more flexibility to install software, and the opportunity to provide better support for you. Can I take my MacBook home with me? You may keep the computer at all times during the school year.However, they must be left at school over the summer for maintenance and upgrades.Your computer will be collected before summer recess, but the same MacBook will be issued to you again upon your return for the following school year.You will have the same MacBook throughout your career at Hotchkiss, so please take care of it. Can I install software on my MacBook? Yes, you may install applications on your computer.You must properly license any applications before installing, and they must be fully compliant with the Hotchkiss Acceptable Use Policy. What happens to the MacBook when I graduate? Beginning with the Class of 2014, any student who uses their computer for at least four years at Hotchkiss will become the owner of that computer upon graduation.Some software will need to be removed due to licensing considerations. Is my MacBook backed up automatically? No. Youmust follow the instructions to set up Time Machine, and then back up your computer daily.You will use the external hard drive that you were issued.After the initial setup, you need only connect the drive to your computer each day, and it will perform a backup quickly and automatically.Instructions were provided with the computer, and are available on Blueboard.If you do not back up your computer, your files may be lost due to hardware malfunction.In some cases, ITS may need to take action that results in data loss.It is entirely your responsibility to back up your data. What is my network drive or home directory? When you start your computer while on campus and enter your username and password, your network drive should appear on your desktop.This is also sometimes referred to as your “home directory” or “h-drive.”This drive is available when you log into any computer on campus.Only materials related to your academics or any school business should be stored on the network.Do not save your music, pictures and videos (other than those needed for school projects) on your network drive. How should I clean my MacBook? You should use only approved products to clean your computer.Apple recommends iKlear for cleaning your screen. iKlearwipes are available from the ITS Service Desk, or online at http://www.klearscreen.com.Never use commercial cleaners or paper towels to clean your screen.Never get any part of your computer wet.

What if my MacBook is damaged? Treat your MacBook with care in order to avoid damage.Should damage occur, immediately report it to the ITS Service Desk.You will be held responsible for the cost of repair for damage caused intentionally or by negligence. You are not permitted to continue to use a damaged computer without reporting it. What if my MacBook is lost or stolen? Take great care to protect your MacBook from loss or theft.Do not leave it unattended in publicly accessible areas, even on the Hotchkiss campus.Contact ITS immediately if you suspect that your computer is lost or stolen. Software has been installed that can assist with recovery.This software attempts to identify the location only; it does not utilize the computers camera or microphone.Tracking is only utilized if a computer is suspected or reported to be missing.If your computer is lost or stolen due to negligence, you will be held responsible for associated costs. What is the Acceptable Use Policy? The Hotchkiss Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is a policy that defines how our technology resources can be used.As a student, this policy applies to you, and you will sign an agreement reinforcing this.The AUP applies to your use of this computer at all times, regardless of whether you are on campus.Full verbiage of the AUP can be found in the Technology section of Blueboard. What is a Service Level Agreement? The Service Level Agreement (SLA) defines in detail the support that ITS will provide to you, and your responsibilities in order to obtain this support.There is a specific SLA for students with school-issued computers. It is available in the Technology section of Blueboard. What if I need help? Assistance with the basics of using your MacBook is included on the Quick Start Guide that was given to you with the computer.Additional information is available in the Technology section of Blueboard. Do not hesitate to contact the IT Service Desk should you have any problems with your computer or any questions. Please contact us – we are here to help.You may email help@hotchkiss.org or call extension 4487.ITS is available from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, and while classes are in session on Saturday. If your school-issued computer becomes inoperable outside of these hours and you must have a temporary replacement immediately, you may visit the Library Circulation Desk. Computer Use Agreement – To what did I agree? For your reference, below is the text of the Computer Use Agreement that you signed when your computer was issued: The Hotchkiss School 2010-2011 Computer Use Agreement I have received a computer from The Hotchkiss School for my use during the 2010-2011 academic year.I agree to take care of this computer, and I understand that I am responsible for returning it in good condition with only reasonable wear.I understand that I will be held responsible if the computer is damaged due to negligence or misuse, or if it is lost.If the computer is lost or damaged, I will promptly report it to the IT Service Desk (x4487). There is always a possibility of data being lost due to malfunction or during the service process.I understand that it is my responsibility to back up my own data, and that The Hotchkiss School is not responsible for data that is lost for any reason. I will abide by the Hotchkiss Acceptable Use Policy at all times when using this computer.
