The image of Islam in Tatar and Russian history Textbooks
*
Before the 1917 Russian Revolution, Tatars had their own system of education,
independent from the official school system of the Russian empire. Traditional Tatar
schools (
Mekteb
and
Medrese
) did not receive state support but depended completely on
the financial means of rich Tatar merchants and businessmen. Tatar intellectuals created
their own educational programs, combining Muslim religious education with secular
education, which also included a history curriculum. As a rule, Tatar scholars acted
independently from the state and also published their own history textbooks. Tatar
schools taught the history of Islam together with World history, the history of Russia
(state history) and Turkic-Tatar history (ethnic history).

Muhammad accompanied with the phrase (“peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him”). All historic dates are shown in Muslim (Hijra) and in Christian (Julian) calendar.

The first professional Tatar historians were Muslim clerics (

education. Although they accepted the modern concepts of European and
Russian historiography, Tatar authors of textbooks perceived these through the prism of
Muslim cultural tradition.
