The Department of Civil Engineering of

Anna University is the oldest in the country. It

dates back to May 17

th

, 1794, when East India

Company established a Survey School to train

military personnel and surveyors. This has

grown to a Civil Engineering School in 1858 and

later a Civil Engineering College in 1859.

The Division of Structural Engineering of

the Department of Civil Engineering was

established in the year 1955 with the main

objective of providing higher education in the

field of Structural Engineering. The thrust is to

develop the Division into a Centre of Excellence

in

research,

consultancy

and

continuing

education programmes.

The Division offers 21 courses to the

Under Graduate Programmes apart from

offering

16

courses

to

Post

Graduate

Programmes in Structural Engineering and

Construction Engineering and Management.



To train the participants to design and

analyse

the

reinforced

concrete

elements.



To introduce the subject in the proper

perspective and to have better and

deeper knowledge.



To provide a strong foundation to the

various concepts through illustrative

examples and interesting applications.



To understand the Indian Standard

Code of Practice.
