Oscar Honor All The President’s Adult men
When William Goldman turned in the initial screenplay, it was universally disliked. Carl Bernstein and his wife at the time, writer Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally), unexpectedly accessible their own version of the script. Bob Woodward disapproved of the way he was portrayed in it, and Robert Redford thought it was off-base. After a re-write by William Goldman didn’t cookery much greater than his first attempt, Redford and the director Alan J. Pakula holed up at a hotel across from the Washington Post offices and finished the screenplay. The final product included just one-tenth of William Goldman’s effort, in spite of this he was but awarded the Oscar for Supreme Adapted Screenplay.
Reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were the lone two who knew the identity of Deep Throat, the Watergate scandal whistleblower. During casting for the part of the thriller informant, Woodward insistently told director Alan J. Pakula that Hal Holbrook was the vital choice. It turns out that Indication Felt, who revealed his identity as Deep Throat in 2005, bore a well resemblance to Holbrook.
The actual offices of The Washington Post were used for two weeks of filming, however the onslaught of interest from the journalists and secretaries who worked there quickly became a distraction. Needing to pass through elsewhere, the production moved to a soundstage at Warner Bros. in Burbank, where an exact replica of the newsroom—down to the wastepaper baskets—had been built.
Producer Walter Coblenz was given the move-ahead to utilize the White Senate for a briefing scene by Gerald Ford’s press secretary, Ron Nessen, then again was then abruptly told it would not be possible. The Ford administration had no motivation in helping the filmmakers with a venture that was going to reflect poorly on the recent president’s old boss, President Richard Nixon.
