Dealing with Stress as an Emergency Medicine Locum It is no secret that the fast-paced nature of emergency medicine makes it very stressful at times. For example, there are some nights that are so frenetic right from the very first hour that the doctor cannot seem to catch his or her breath. What tends to be the most exciting aspect of emergency medicine can also be its biggest stress inducer. Locums need to be especially sensitive to the stress so that it does not negatively impact either their performance on the job or their life outside of it.
Dealing with stressas an emergency medicine locumcan be a little different. First of all, locums don't tend to have good friends in every city they work in. Therefore, many of them are somewhat socially isolated. Things are also different for locums in the sense that it may take them a while to figure out how other staff members deal with stress within the confines of the workplace. At any rate, though, the stress has to be addressed. Dealing by Talking Perhaps the most effective way of dealing with stress in any situation is by talking things out. For the doctor, sitting down with others experienced in emergency medicine is an opportunity to unload the mind and emotions. Doing so is very therapeutic. Where locums are concerned, it is a matter of finding one or two people within the department the doctor feels comfortable speaking with. Where that's not possible, there is another option: blogging.

Emergency medicine locums without one or two confidants they can speak with can still get the same stress-relieving benefits by blogging. Rather than speaking directly, the doctor can release his or her stress by writing. And by the way, the writing doesn't necessarily have to be negative; it does not necessarily have to be the venting of frustrations. Even a well-written blog looking at emergency medicine from a clinical sense can be very beneficial. Getting Regular Exercise More than anyone else, doctors recognize the importance of regular exercise for both physical and mental health. Yet doctors can fall into the same trap as everyone else: being unmotivated to exercise due to fatigue, lack of time, etc. Locum tenens doctors may have an advantage here in that they move from city to city over the course of their careers. Without roots in any one place, there is less to do when the doctor is not on duty. That downtime is perfect for getting the exercise necessary to relieve stress. Some staffing agencies help locums out in this regard by providing gym access. Where that access is unavailable, doctors can always go running or walking, visit a local community swimming pool, hop on a bicycle, join a local exercise class, or just about anything else. Getting Plenty of Sleep Study after study has routinely shown that not getting enough sleep not only makes it harder to deal with stress but also increases it as well. Locum physicians should make restful sleep a priority. Granted, the nature of emergency medicine can interfere with sleep, but doctors still need to make a point of establishing a sleep routine and sticking with it as much as possible. Emergency medicine is the most fast-paced and stressful specialty of medicine. For the locum physician, any stress caused on the job is at risk of being exacerbated by the locum lifestyle. So locum doctors must make an extra effort to talk things out, get regular exercise, and establish a general sleep routine. These three things go a long way toward relieving the stress of emergency medicine.
