Airport Information for Rome

Most international airlines use Rome'sFiumicinoairport - (code -FCO). Direct trains run to various stations in Rome, includingthe main station, Roma Termini. Not that quick or cheap, but a reasonable (just) frequency.

The airport is around 30km from the centre - it is often referred to as Leonardo Da Vinci. Estimated transfer time into city centre > about 1 hour 20 minutes from flight touchdown

Some low cost, domestic and charter carriers head intoCiampinoairport(code -CIA). You either buya bus ticket(poor frequency)toget to the train station at Ciampino - for regular train services to Rome's main train station (takes 20 minutes).

Alternatively, there's a not altogether cheapRyanair airport express that connects with their flights(journeytakes 50 minutes). Estimated transfer time into citycentre > about 1 hour 30 minutes from flight touchdown

Option 1- Fly non-stop from Birmingham Airport

British Airways to Rome Fiumicino (FCO)

This service is beingwithdrawn from October 30th.

BA are the onlyairline currentlyflyingnon-stopfrom Birmingham to Rome. It is therefore the most convenient option, but it is a little tainted byits frequency- there'sjust 5 services a week.

This can make the servicequite expensive duringpeak times. Still, there are somegood deals to be had if you book well in advance.

Option 2 - Flyvia Europe from Birmingham Airport

Air France to Rome Linate (LIN) or Fiumicino (FCO) > changesplanes at Paris

KLM to Rome Linate (LIN) or Fiumicino (FCO) > changes planes at Amsterdam

Lufthansa to Rome Linate(LIN)or Fiumicino(FCO) > changes planes at Munich or Frankfurt

SN Brussels to Rome Fiumicino(FCO) > changes planes at Brussels

Swiss to Rome Fiumicino (FCO) > changesplanes at Zurich

If the non-stop flights are full from Birmingham Airport, your next most convenient (and quickest) option directly into Rome Airport may well be one of these five airlines, with all routings requiring you to connect at a hub airport in Europe. Taking a connecting flight is usually much less hassle than travelling down to Heathrow or Stansted. That said, if you do live close to Coventry, the next option below may be better for you. Fares tend to vary enormously according to how busy each airline is, but bargains can certainly be had when the European airlines are looking to fill seats.

There's really no point in choosing flights where the wait for the connection is much over an hour unless there's nothing else available. Most flight options depart a few times daily (less on weekends). It’s best to use sites like Travelyze tofind cheap flightswith short connections.

When looking at some timetables, you may notice that it's also possible to switch airlines (i.e. take an Air France flight to Paris to connect with a Alitalia flight to Rome). That is generally a very expensive option, and offers little time savings or benefits for leisure travellers.

Option 3 - Flynon-stopfrom other UK airports

Option 4 - Use connectingrail and underground services from Birmingham New Street Virgin Trains to London Euston

Connect to> Underground between Euston and Waterloo (Northern Line)

Connect to> Eurostar to Paris

Connect to> Various Rail services to Rome Termini Station The easiest and most comfortable surface route to Rome is by rail. As ever, Eurostar - combined with high speed European rail services - offer the quickest option. Once you get to Paris , there are many routings available to the Italian capital - though very few are direct -usually, a couple of changes are required. One of the easiest is a transfer by metro to one of the other long haul Parisian train stations, then settle back for a sleeper service all the way to Rome.

Most trains arrive in Rome's uninspiring main station, Roma Termini, which - apart from being conveniently central - is fairly close to a lot of budget accommodation. Some trains arrive at the other main stations, Tiburtina and Ostiense. These are slightly less convenient places to arrive than Termini, but nowhere near disastrous (bus services available).

It's extremely unlikely this option will undercut the cost of the cheaper air fares, but you do at least see some of Europe on the way.

Option 5 - Use connectingcoach services from Birmingham Digbeth

There are no direct coach services to Rome, so be prepared to spend half a day either hanging around a Paris bus station - or exploring some of the best aspects of Western civilisation. It depends how you want to place a spin on the long waiting time for your connection.

This option is very slow, and may barely undercut the cheapest air fares. You do at least get the chance to see a lot more of Europe on the way, but this service really is only recommend people who love travelling on coaches, or for budget minded travellers who can't find a cheap air fare at the last minute.

There's no central bus station in Rome - services arrive and depart outside Tiburtina station (bus/taxi to places more central). Note reservations are essential, and you need to check-in for the European service at London Victoria. Possible alternative routings to Rome Ifyou book in advance,you shouldn't have too manyproblems findinga decent flight to Rome. There aren't that many alternative to those mentioned above - just a couple worthy of mention.

Ifyou do want to depart locally, and can't get a non-stopor connectingflight, one option is to head to

Brussels(which has tons of flights non-stopfrom Birmingham Airport) - and then take low cost airline

Virgin Express from Brussels to Rome. You'll need to be careful, as the two flights have to be booked separately- and the second option(the flight to Rome) has to be booked in Euros. Allow at least 2-3 hours for

makinga connection(in case of delays - there's no need to transfer between airports).
