Home Burglary Tips You Can Use this Summer In February 2014, theNew York Timespublished an article about the declining crime rate through the first six months of 2013. The article stated that the U.S. has enjoyed 25 years of decline in both violent and nonviolent crimes. That trend continued through the remainder of 2013, all of 2014, and into the first few months of this year.
We are happy to report that property crimes are gradually declining across the country. But now is no time to let your guard down. Instead, it’s the perfect time tokeep doing those things that have made all of us safer. Burglary is perhaps the most common property crime in the United States. Burglars prey on vulnerable homeowners who make it easy for them to break in, quickly seize valuables, and get out. A good burglar can be in and out of a home in less than seven minutes. Your job is to make that as difficult as possible. The harder you make it, the more likely you will not be a victim of burglary. We have put together some tips that you can use to prevent burglary this summer, divided into three categories: Interior Strategies There are some easy things you can do in the interior of your home: 1.Doors and WindowsAll of your first-floor doors and windows should be secured with heavy-duty locks. This includes double-keyed deadbolts on your doors. 2.Stored ValuablesBurglars head immediately to the master bedroom upon gaining entry to a home. Never store valuables in the master bedroom; put them in a safe located in a bathroom or other interior room.

Monitronics dealers offer basic systems with door and window sensors, and more advanced systems that can include everything from motion detectors to video surveillance cameras. Exterior Strategies What burglars see on the outside of your home can deter them from attempting to victimize you. Here are some tips for exterior strategies: 1.LandscapingLandscaping should be trimmed in order to provide a clear view of first-floor windows and doors from the street. It also helps to plant thorny shrubs in front of first-floor windows to deter burglars from trying to break in. 2.Yard MaintenanceA well-kept yard tells burglars that you care about your property. This suggests to them that you also might be more careful about protecting your valuables. Believe it or not, a well-kept yard is a deterrent. 3.LightingLighting is as important on the exterior of your home as it is the interior. Strategically placed, motion-sensitive lighting that illuminates doors, walkways, and driveways is always good. Personal Strategies Our last tip is related to what is often referred to asruse burglary.” Theseburglaries tend to spike during the summer months. A ruse burglary starts with a knock on the front door. When you answer the door, you are confronted by someone who claims to be a charity organizer or a public service worker. That person will engage you in conversation to distract you while a partner enters through a back door or window to burglarize your home. Be very wary of such scams. Always ask for proper identification and, if necessary, verify it before engaging in any sort of conversation.
