Hospitalist jobs are some of the most rapidly expanding roles in United States medical industry. It remains something of an unusual choice for medical students, as many work towards beginning their full training with the perception that all roles are similar to those of general practitioners and surgeons.

However, a hospitalist is someone who combines an excellent medical knowledge with numerous other skills that are not necessarily found among other doctors, such as leadership and management. This means that for some, becoming a hospitalist entails more than they were looking to do as part of their medical career.

The demand for hospitalists is much higher than the supply as candidates consider their options for the aforementioned reasons. This means that a highly qualified hospitalist can expect excellent financial rewards, as many facilities must resort to luring talent from elsewhere to fill their vacancies and must pay salaries to match.

Leisure Time- Hospitalists follow one of the most unusual shift patterns in the medical industry. The nature of the role means that they need to be available for a patient within their care as much as they possibly can. This often means long, regular shifts. The typical hospitalist shift is up to twelve hours in length, which is at the longer end of the spectrum in professional medical roles. employed by a hospital, some hospitalists who plan their time effectively and work hard while on shift can receive several weeks off at a time as they wait for a new turnaround of patients.

Career Progression - Hospitalist jobs are somewhat unusual in that they do not provide any particular form of career advancement. The benefits on offer are such that many choose to remain in their profession for the entire length of their careers, making use of the excellent compensation and extended time off to ensure that both they and the role remain fresh. For those that do require a change later in life, the obvious step is to become a medical director. The organizational and leadership skills demonstrated throughout their career serve as an excellent grounding for directing a group. In many cases this can be combined with ongoing patient care for additional income.
