Created by Ryan Dahl in 2009, a server-side JavaScript engine as a way to easily enable non-blocking I/O operations in a Web browser. Node.js has come a long way. It has matured into a programming language being used in enterprise now. Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine and has gained immense popularity among mobile app developers. As more employers make server-side framework with JavaScript a required job skill, this clearly indicated Node.js and the demand around it.
The flexible environment provided by Node.js and tones of libraries provided has led to major fanfare addition to the user database of Node.js. The central repository known as Node Package Manager tool (the npm), which provides central repository of shared modules has grown manifold allowing developers access to client-side JavaScript as well as Node.js.
Supporting Mobile Web
With the increase of mobile Web, mobile devices make up at least 30% of total Web traffic. Node.js as a framework has a lot to offer mobile app developers. Mobile apps serve Web pages to mobile uses, since information is fetched from the backend of the app, light-weight Node.js manages this heavy task with ease.
Enterprise Software Development
Node.js gains increasing popularity with Enterprises since its core purpose is to respond to network requests in the backend. It is also able to handle multiple HTTP requests in the backend and therefore handle more traffic.

Also, the flexible, lightweight workflow of Node.js enables each application to include a set of dependencies in its own dependency tree. The success of Node.js is evident in Enterprise due to the fact that the companies that have adopted it are like Netflix, Walmart, PayPal, Dow Jones and Groupon. Node.js allows enterprise companies like these to innovate quickly in specific areas of business as the developer teams can work on specific parts of the application. Node.js has provided a way to start small and start fast. For example, Paypal has started using Node for its log-in service. A service can be created as stand-alone but can communicate with other parts of the applications.
Alternate to existing technologies
Node.js offers a lower cost alternative to traditional app development stacks such as Java Enterprise Edition (JEE). Node is being used to power Web apps and also for IT infrastructure support. A software solution can add a modern front end for a legacy application or an API framework for connecting multiple systems. Currently, Node.js is downloaded about 2 million times a month. And with the community growing from 8 to 400 contributors since inception, there is support for different enterprise implementations. With most developers being aware of the JavaScript language, this has aided Node.js’s popularity. Also, NodeJs is easier and faster to code and is preferred for CPU intensive tasks.
Industry Statistics
Node.js has been gaining edge over Groovy and Ruby on Rails. This has also led to better job trends and wide spread industry appreciation. We will continue to see more Node.js implementations in Enterprise in the future. If you are considering an Enterprise implementation, Node.js can be a good investment.
