Psychiatry Employment 101 To most Americans the idea of psychiatric treatment involves images of lying on a therapist's couch discussing the darkest secrets of childhood. Many view this type of treatment as being a complete waste of time and effort, and largely unsuccessful. Whether or not those assumptions are true, what we perceive as psychiatry is actually psychology. Though the two fields are similar, there is one major difference between them that bumps psychiatry up to the next level.
A psychiatrist is a licensed medical doctor who has chosen mental illness as his specialty. As such, he is qualified to perform medical examinations and treat mental disorders with drugs. A psychologist can do neither of those things. Furthermore, since psychiatry is a specific medical specialty there are anumber of different psychiatry jobs available, some of which we've listed below. Needless to say the field of psychiatry is open to private practice as well as work in hospitals, schools, prisons, research institutes, public clinics, and so on. Child Psychiatrist- One of the more common psychiatry jobs in America is that of the child psychologist. This doctor works with both young children and adolescents to help diagnose and treat a multitude of mental disorders. This type of career requires not only the general medical knowledge needed for psychiatry, but also a special "bedside manner" it takes to deal with children. Addiction Psychiatrist- Addiction is an area which tends to be very controversial in the medical field. Doctors who take psychiatry jobs in the area of addiction are constantly torn between the concepts of disease and personal responsibility. Some in the medical field consider addiction to be a disease while others consider it to be simply the result of poor behavioral choices. The addiction psychiatrist must filter through the debate in order to find the cause of addiction and each individual patient.

Adult Psychiatrist- The adult psychiatrist is a similar to his child-focused peer in scope and function, if not in practice. As a psychiatrist he will deal with many of the same issues as the child psychiatrist but with different treatment options. It is a rather challenging field as doctors need to balance their medical knowledge with environmental factors that contribute to mental illness. Forensic Psychiatrist - Perhaps the most glamorous of all psychiatry jobs is that of the forensic psychiatrist. We see this doctor portrayed in television programs as the creative and intelligent individual who analyzes crime suspects, but his job is really no more glamorous than that of the child or adult psychiatrist. The special challenge to this type of work is the fact that the doctor is using psychiatry as a means of providing supporting evidence for one position or another. Psychiatry Outlook If you're considering one of the many available psychiatry jobs as a career choice, you'll be pleased to know the Bureau of Labor Statistics presents a very good outlook for the field. They expect psychiatry jobs to see double-digit increases into the next decade with salaries rising proportionally. Source: 1.Vista Staffing-http://www.vistastaff.com/job-board/PSY
