Scoliosis Treatment for Adults Everyone has a natural curvature of their spine, but scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the
spine in the shape of an “S” or “C”. Scoliosis is found in approximately 4% of the population, and is most commonly found in girls. It is normally detected earlier on in life, in either school screening exams or by the family doctor. While scoliosis is revealed in the teen years, it can still affect you in your adult life. Adults tend to have more symptoms than teenagers do due to degeneration in discs and joints leading to narrowing of the openings for the spinal sac and nerves (spinal stenosis). Patients tend to lean forward for either the loss of the natural curve in the lower back, or to try and open space for their nerves.
Adults may also experience back pain and stiffness, fatigue from the strain put on back and legs, and they
may experience cramping, numbness, and shooting pain in legs from pinching of nerves.
Luckily there are many treatments available for scoliosis, ranging from surgery, to exercise or
stretching. If the curvature of the spine is 40 degrees or more surgery may be recommended. The intention
of surgery is not to make the spine straight but to make sure the curve does not worsen. While surgery is always the last resort doctors will recommend some simple exercises and stretches. New research has found thatinversersion tablescan help tremendously with symptoms from adult scoliosis. Inversersion therapy involves being upside down or at an inverted angle to take pressure off the nerve root and disks of the spine. The goal is to increase the space between the vertebrae for therapeutic relief. Hanging upside down causes each joint in the body to be loaded in an equal and opposite demeanour to standing in an exact position of joint alignment. While this will not correct the curvature of the spine, it will provide relief from back pain. Living as an adult with scoliosis can be painful, especially with a busy schedule. While there is no easy way to rid yourself of the curvature in your spine, there are options to aid with the pain. Theinversion tableis simple, quick and provides temporary back pain relief.
