The Diverse Medical Specialization of Psychiatry Psychiatry is one of the most diverse medical specializations. While other professionals may have a small number of options for treating a diagnosed illness, psychiatrists have a large scope from which to draw their conclusions, incorporating psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and medication. They also regularly work as part of teams, combining their knowledge and influence with psychologists and nurses.
Psychiatry jobs are particularly diverse, as they incorporate a range of disciplines, including neuroscience, biochemistry and psychology, along with general medicine and biology. The Positive Side of Specializing in PsychiatryThere are a number of reasons to specialize in psychiatry, which remains a growing industry with huge possibilities for personal development: jobs are in particularly high demand at all times. By focusing on mental health, there are always newPsychiatry issues arising that require treatment. In areas of heavy job cuts, for example, rates of depression will rise and hospitals need to be well equipped to treat patients effectively. Neuroscience in itself has a vast scope for treatment. There are so many different sources of mental illness or potential causes that an experienced psychiatrist always has the opportunity to specialize further. This may lead to working exclusively with younger patients, whereby a doctor could specialize in child and adolescent psychiatry. Other common branches include addiction, geriatric and military psychiatry, a ll operating within a different context. Psychiatry jobs are among the highest paid in the industry, and the opportunities for promotion are many. Most psychiatrists will see themselves operating primarily in group practices, meaning that the scope for leadership positions is great. Even within a hospital setting, it is possible to achieve a position of authority within a department, leading treatment and directing others.

Potential Downsides of PsychiatryPsychiatry jobs are well paid for a reason. There are certain factors that put off applicants for psychiatry jobs, although none are completely insurmountable. The role can involve long hours, as the psychiatrist is the primary point of contact between doctor and patient. Unlike general practitioners, there is rarely a case of further referral, meaning that a psychiatrist must spend a lot of time with each patient to achieve results. A typical working week can run more than 60 hours. The training to become a psychiatrist can be some of the most demanding in the industry, with between three and eight years of postgraduate education depending on the specialization. Undergraduates incorporate a wide variety of skills into their education, not all of which is focused on medicine. With such a large part of the role involving direct patient contact, it is not uncommon for courses to involve the study of social sciences and other interpersonal disciplines. The job itself can be extremely stressful. While a psychiatrist is unlikely to directly encounter such potentially disastrous circumstances as a surgeon might, they are more likely to encounter aggressive or violent patients due to the nature of their work. However, good training compensates for this, allowing psychiatrists to be well-equipped to deal with these situations.
Psychiatry jobs are not alone in having both positive and negative aspects. While the industry can be challenging, it is also highly rewarding for the right type of person. Source: VISTA Staffing Solutions-http://www.vistastaff.com/job-board/PSY
