To Stop a Burglar, Think like One There is a common idiom that says it takes a thief to catch a thief. The idea is that one thief knows how another works. Those of us in the security business believe that this old idiom is sage advice. In order to stop a burglar from successfully invading your home, it helps to think like a burglar yourself. Thinking like a burglar will help you identify vulnerabilities so that they can be mitigated. Of course, we are certainly not recommending you get a group of friends together to begin burglarizing all the homes in your neighborhood. Instead, just step back and try to think of all the things you might consider doing as a burglar to ensure you would succeed.

Look at Vulnerable Entry Points Every burglar wants to get in and out as quickly as possible without being detected. Therefore, they look for weaknesses that will allow easy entry. The most successful burglars, for example, know the front door is very easy to breach with a well-placed kick. This should motivate a homeowner to install double-keyed deadbolt locks that are more difficult to be breached with a single kick. Look around the first floor of your home and identify other vulnerable entry points. Sliding glass doors to the rear patio and family room windows that might be kept open during the summer months are prime examples. You can purchase high-quality locks for both. Look at Your Valuable Possessions Burglars looking to get into your home are not after collectibles that they can put on their own mantels above the fireplace. They are looking for things they can sell quickly for cash. That means they are after jewelry, electronics and prescription drugs, among other items. Keep those things out of reach and out of sight.

They are constantly looking for signs that a home might be vacant.Don’tlet them figure out whether you are home based on your actions. Consider additional ways to increase your privacy, such as being careful with social media, not sticking to a predictable schedule, and so on. Keep burglars guessing at all times.
