Top 5 Tips to Reduce Foot Pain Thehuman footis quite an engineering marvel – it is composed of 26 bones, 33 joints, around 100 tendons, muscles, and ligaments all working together to support our body and allow us to move around throughout our lifetime. Rather than pampering our feet, many of us, for whatever reason, make the feet’s difficult job even harder. We all know about how prolonged sitting, high heels and badly fitting shoes can cause stress to our feet. But did you know excessive weight is hard for our feet? A study actually shows that, bariatric surgery that helped patients lose an average of 90 lbs., found a drastic 83% drop on foot complaints.
Foot pain can come in all sorts of types and causes. A research from the University of Maryland Medical Center shows that, around 75% of Americans will experience foot pain at any point of their lives. Sometimes the problems are serious and require an orthopedic surgeon likeDr. James Cottom. Otherwise the situation can range from mild to severe, and can be a short or an ongoing issue. Fortunately for us, there are many ways to reduce and relieve foot pain, and here are our five testedandproven tips and home remedies for foot pain.
1. Hot and Cold Water Therapy Ever wonder why athletes wrap their knees and ankles with ice after their game or intense workout? Well, ice helps in reducing inflammation, which is important for the overall health of the legs and feet of the athlete, particularly on the joints (knees and ankles). Hot water also helps in promoting better blood flow. Directions: For hot and cold therapy, fill in a bucket with icy or cold water, and fill a separate bucket with warm water. Get a chair where you can sit comfortably and dip your feet on the hot water bucket for around 3 minutes, and then dip your feet to the cold bucket for around 30 seconds. Repeat the process three times and have a cold foot bath. Another good option is using a heat pack and ice pack. Use both packs alternatively for about 10 minutes to reduce pain and inflammation. 2. Vinegar Therapy Vinegar is a common household remedy, and it is used in various treatments, including foot pain caused by sprain and strain to reduce inflammation. Directions: Mix equal parts of water and vinegar into 2 containers, with one container using cold water, and hot on the other. Soak your towel to the hot container, squeeze to drain excess liquid, and then wrap the towel to the affected area of your foot. Leave it for 5 minutes. Then, do the same thing using the cold mixture. Repeat this process at least 3 times a day.
3. Epsom Salt Therapy Epsom salt is one of the most popular products out there for relieving pain, especially foot pain. It is used alongside with warm water to soothe aching muscles and joints. Directions: Mix around 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt to a container with warm water. Then, soak your feet for about 15 minutes to sooth pain. This home remedy will make your feet dry, thus, you can use moisturizer or lotion. 4. Stretch Your Feet Stretching is probably the most important thing you can do to relieve pain on your feet. Pain is usually on the ankle, and it causes mobility and range of motion. Stretching your ankle helps keep that mobility, range of movement, and structural integrity of your foot.
Examples of Foot Stretching Exercises Passive Stretch for Toe Extension Grasp your big toe with one hand while holding your heel with the other hand. Stretch from the bottom of the foot and hold it for around 30 seconds. Passive Ankle Stretch Grasp your foot and stretch up and down through your ankle. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds. 5. Stretch Your Calf Calf Stretch Stand with one foot behind keep the back foot’s knee straight and forward leg bent. Keep the back foot’s heel on the floor and turned slightly outside. Lead into a wall and allow the calf of your back leg to stretch for around 30 seconds. Perform the same stretch on the opposite leg. Of course, these are only home remedies. They may not provide relief for all types of foot pain, but they can provide quick relief for most types of foot pain problems. If symptoms persist, you should always seek medical attention.
