It is fair to say that some of the concerns mentioned in the article do need to be addressed. But in fairness, the trucking industry has plenty of positives, too.

Eǀery joď has its pros aŶd ĐoŶs. For eǀery ĐoŵplaiŶt AŵeriĐa’s truĐk driǀers haǀe aďout ǁhat they do, there is a corresponding complaint in any corporate offices. The challenges in trucking jobs are not inherent to trucking itself; they are part of every job in America. It is only working conditions and job descriptions that dictate how challenges manifest themselves from one job to the next.

For example, it is true that truck drivers put in long days. But so to do stockbrokers and nurses. It is true that truck drivers often find themselves feeling isolated and lonely. But guess what? So do psychiatrists. Truck driving is like any other job in that it is what the individual driver makes it. A positive attitude goes a long way toward making truck driving jobs great jobs.

As one of the largest and oldest refrigerated carriers in America, we know fromexperience that truck driving jobshave a lot of positives to offer. Below you find just a small sampling.

Good Pay and Benefits

The average trucker in the industry can earn in the mid-40s just by showing up for work and getting the job done the right way. But that is just a starting point. With experience, a trucker can earn more by being safe, earning more lucrative loads, and even adding additional license endorsements for more specialized jobs. For the record, numbers from the Social Security Administration show that the average wage in 2015 was $46,120. That means truck driving is right there. And at C.R. England, the average pay is closer to the mid-50s.

Ability to Work Independently

One of the chief complaints of workers in traditional office and industrial environments is the fact that they constantly have supervisors looking over their shoulders. Trucking jobs are remarkably different. Being a truck driver me ans being a self-starter capable of working independently. The driver is given a load along with a pickup and delivery schedule. It is his or her joď to piĐk up the load aŶd get it to ǁhere it’s goiŶg oŶ tiŵe. Whateǀer happeŶs iŶ ďetǁeeŶ is up to the driǀer.

Room for Advancement

Despite the belief that truck driving is a dead-end job, it is not. It is very common for truck drivers to spend a few years on the road before becoming driver trainers or classroom trainers. Some move into dispatch while others take on management roles. Of course, those who love being on the road can transition from national jobs to regional or dedicated jobs if they want more home time. The point is that there is plenty of room for career growth.

Do not believe the myths about trucking. Trucking is a great career choice.
